To Tweet or Not to Tweet?

Posted July 25, 2009 7:29 AM

Ever since Pepsi added a Twitter URL on the new cans of Pepsi Raw — encouraging consumers to go online and share their opinion on the product— to tweet or not to tweet has been the question. Now, many other companies are using Twitter IDs on their products to capitalize on their followers to promote their brands. This is seen as a method of connecting with their core customers for their opinions and suggestions. How has your business used Twitter? What are the benefits to this approach? Is there any downside?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Packaging & Labeling, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Packaging & Labeling today.

I tweet for http://www.wikimheda.org. I find its an effective way to communicate with industry peers. The material handling/logistics industry is surprisingly well-represented there. Check me out @mathandlingedge.

Our firm York Saw & Knife (http://www.yorksaw.com) recently started using Twitter and so far it seems to be working well.

Generally, I there must be a significant base of Twitter users to reallly make the effort worthwhile. Clearly for Pepsi, there are enough fans of the soft drink that use Twitter to warrant the investment. However, I would not think that this would be the case for everyone.

Every business must carefully review whether they are getting a return on their investment in terms of sales, attention, authority or something else of value to legitimize the amount of time and effort they spend.
