Chinese Man Makes his own Helicopter

Posted August 10, 2009 10:14 AM

From Coolest Gadgets:

I realize that normally we devote our articles to products you can actually buy, but the story behind this man's helicopter is flat-out amazing and inspirational to us all. Wu Zhongyuan is a 20 year old farmer who, ever since he was a child, dreamed of not needing to climb mountains anymore. It would appear that he found his remedy by creating his own flying machine. Wu used principles that he learned in middle-school physics and other relevant knowledge by surfing the Internet on a mobile phone to create this helicopter. The blades are made from Elm tree wood, and a motorcycle engine provides the power. The frame is reinforced with steel pipes, and he claims that his single-seat copter can fly up to 2,600 feet! Believe it or not, he assembled this DIY helicopter for just $1,600. This is one of those stories that I really hope is not made up. After all, who hasn't had a dream and desired that it take flight? Mr. Zhongyuan doesn't sound like he had a major corporate sponsor, just vision and ingenuity. Sadly, the Chinese government won't let Wu fly. I'm pretty certain that the FAA probably wouldn't let an American inventor fly their own helicopter either, but the fact that someone could do so much with so little just inspires me, really. Kind of makes you wonder what you are doing with your life, doesn't it?

Right now there are probably a bunch of engineers at Bell Helicopter who are feeling a tiny twinge of job panic.

I have serious doubts that this thing would even get off the ground let alone fly 2600 feet (from the builder's unsubstantiated claims).

My obvious primary argument would be that

a) the power to weight ratio is far too low using the materials used and a motorcycle engine as the powerplant.

b) it appears to have no control surfaces whatsoever (eg- to stabilize the helicopter in flight and at the very least to allow the thing to move in a forward direction).

Is it SOOOO HARD for a reporter to at least bother to go and view the thing flying rather than just slap a picture in a newspaper and write a story based on second-hand and unproven 'facts'.

Sadly, the Chinese government won't let Wu fly

Yes, that's right it's the government keeping this contraption on the ground (not simple physics and gravity), just like its the government suppressing working free-energy over unity generation technology.

It would come as an enormous shock for most EAA (Experimenatl Aircraft Association) members to hear that "the FAA probably wouldn't let an American inventor fly his own helicopter" since it is being done every day of the year, every year. Apparently the person who submitted this has no knowledge of the Amateur-Built Rule under which more new aircraft are built and registered every year in the US than by all of the factories combined . . .

"GA" to you, guest ... except for the fact that it's a real boon to such a posting if you offer-up a link to whatever it is that you're making reference to (when it isn't necessarily common knowledge to one and all).

Admittedly, anyone who watches the evening news religiously here in the US has at one time or another heard of "Oshkosh".

But many, especially elsewhere may not be familiar with the Experimental Aircraft Association itself <<visit)

"PS" --- I agree, looks like pretty pathetic journalism...

Cheers to all ~

Thanks for the GA. I was the "Guest", but was having some problems with the confuser; lost the first two attempted replies, and never did manage to get shown as logged in, nor to post any links [and THANK YOU for doing so!]. I live under two hours from Oshkosh, and go there nearly every year (three full LONG days this year, but didn't manage to go the rest of the week). Member since 1978.

Have been out of town most of time since I posted this, and just now getting back to digests for that period.

"Always give credit where credit is due..." I would *hope* that something further comes of the original post... e.g., a revelation that the fellow actually came up with some "divine" / new control capability, to allow such an inexpensive copter to fly ("controllably") at the altitudes stated... Alas, I doubt that will happen. Nonetheless, I, myself, have dreamt for all-too-many years of building my own experimental aircraft... (enjoyed responding to TP's blog, of (post 8)"days-gone-by")... and still... having had several "close encounters" ... (one in particular, a client at Spruce Creek Fly-In, in Florida, who had his own Pitts) ... the dream remains alive. Perhaps there'll be time when I retire. Maybe a *vacation* to Oshkosh, prior-to that date ... a decade-or-so away, yet...! Best wishes ~

Vacation(s) to Oshkosh at AirVenture time are always good - but there are smaller fly-ins in MANY places. I can provide several very useful sites to help find them if you wish . . . and you can join EAA and get magazines, newsletters, and quite a variety of educational & entertaining articles and information, regardless of where you are.
