Information for an Innovative Idea

04/01/2015 2:53 AM

Question to cr4

Dear respected gurus -Since I came up with an new idea- to use Basalt rocks as building blocks. For this goal I thought to utilize concetration of sun radiation to achieve high temperature in the focus, high enough to melt the basalt rock inorder to cut them .

Nice!- isn't it? But then I thought that I'm not the first smart guy to think so, so I googled around, and found that the Incas used this technology to cut rocks in their city of Machu Picchu! And a scientist Prof. Ivan Watkins from st.cloud university in Minnesota investgated this idea and developed some innovative mirror for the same reason and patented it on 1986: us4611857.

Though I was looking for any information if this idea was ever implemented, I didn't find any evidence .

I tried to contact prof. Watkins at St.Cloud university, but I didn't succeed.

Can anyone help me here?

Thank you in advance

This sounded very familiar..... then it occurred to me, where I heard it before.

You have to be careful, this sounds like something Giorgio A. Tsoukalos would say.

The picture along with the comment clearly indicates the man is "stoned" and judging from the physical arrangement of his hair he apparently has recently been "slapped" by someone or himself.

Does this not qualify him for being a recipient or an example of a "stone slap"?

Yes, a 'Stone Cold Slap' for him.

I just don't know if that picture was taken before the 'Slap' or after.

My girlfriends is really into documentary's.... when every this guy comes up..... which is every documentary that deals with aliens.. we turn the channel.

Unfortunately, he uses cuts from legitimate scientists such as Robert Schoch in his documentary's and through creative editing, to put value and validation into his thoughts....

Uhmmm ..... Has he put anything out on the "alien" crossings occurring along US borders?

Since he apparently is an expert on alien activity as well as alien invasion, maybe our government should hire him as a consultant on these matters.

No?

It irks me every time I hear the word "alien" used to describe immigrants and I can't figure exactly how or why this came about. Maybe he is the source?

As we all know, Machu Picchu and other megalithic structures were built by ancient aliens using technology way beyond our current knowledge. Unfortunately, none of these aliens are currently participating members of the CR4 forum (with the possible exception of a few Anonymous Posters) so I doubt that you will find much help here.

I think you may have to research the "solex converter" that James Bond was on the trail of in "the man with the golden gun".

I wouldn't try to cut thick stone with anything but a diamond saw or water-jet.

With a laser, it is vaporizing the material in the "cutting zone" using extreme heat. If you do not vaporize but just heat the cutting zone, the stone will heat up and most likely explode like a grenade! Or at least spit shards of sharp high velocity frag all over the work area.

If you have ever put a propane torch to concrete then you know what happens.

Lasers are not "magic bullets" they do not work for every application that someone says a laser will do the job!

there's more to that when cutting with a laser.

Quick basic description.

The laser vaporizes the material, and then pressurized air to blow the vaporized material away.

More Detailed Description.

You are correct, I didn't feel like going into a detailed description. It just seems like some people think "I have a difficult cutting job to perform HMMMM..... A laser will work!" without regard for any science, technology or tried and true practices.

I appreciate your clarification.

yep,.... having been a CNC programmer in another life. Sales tell people all you have to do is hit cycle start to cut a piece.

Sales tell people all you have to do is hit cycle start to cut a piece.

And you are right on this one too. You can hit cycle start all day but if there is no program? Or tool offsets? Or fixture offsets? Datum zeros? you're in trouble!

I started programming CNC in 1989 on a Sharnoa Tiger III controller with a one line display. Having to program by hand on this controller taught me the hard way and the easy way to program, and also to not have a cutter in the spindle when testing out a new unproven program. A G00 instead of a G01. OOPS! I broke a custom shape ground 1" diameter end mill.

You can't compare basalt to concrete, because concrete is a substance composed of different materials that continue to behave in their original physical properties, unlike to basalt which has a melting point!
