How Do I Get Admin Rights Back in Win 7? - Help!!

04/09/2015 1:13 PM

I've been given a computer which is only a few years old, the reason given was that he couldn't 'get on with it'... Whatever that means.

I've powered it up and updated Windows, it seems a fine computer running a new installation of Win 7 Prof. (refurbished).

However I can't download programs using IE supplied, there is no comment about the legality of the installation. Everything works fine, but I can't get full administrator rights (I think that is what's wrong).

I have a laptop running Win7 no problem, it may well be an IE security problem?? but I can't find why...

The hard drive looks like its never been used since installation of Win 7.

Any idea what the problem could be??

John.

There are several password recovery programs out there and they cost about $35.00 U.S.. What they typically do is crack the password and erase it leaving you with a computer with no password protected accounts.

Some programs will actually give you the password but I'm not sure of the legality of those programs.

I have a program that does this and it works well. The link is below is for the one I use.

http://windows-password-recovery-tool-professional.en.softonic.com/

I collect and refurbish computers for underprivileged children and for the occasional friend that can't remember their password.

I'm not being asked for a password, I'm just logging on with my user name which is flagged as being administrator level.

Indeed it seems that I can do most things, such as set up connection to my homegroup network.

But when it comes to accessing facebook, CR4 or any website IE just will not let me click on buttons for download etc...

On my laptop with Win 7 There is no problem, indeed it might just be a case of IE settings.

The software is showing as all legit and registered, so its not a legal or password problem...

I don't know, its a right pain LOL

John

I see, Can you access the internet? Or maybe download Google Chrome web browser on your working computer to a flash drive and use the flash drive to install it on the other computer.

I haven't used I.E for many many many years due to silly issues like the one you're having.

You can private message me if you have any more questions.

Good luck.

I tried to download Chrome as well as other software but it just lets me click on the download button and nothing else happens.

The internet is there and I can browse web sites, but if its secure like facebook then it displays nothing.

If I try to click on a button to download software, absolutely nothing happens.

At first I thought this was lack of admin rights as a user, but no I am registered as the administrator.

I am at my wits end - anybody any clues??

If you just forget the password you can use password manager.

If you were able to activate the Administrator account by any means such as the Command Prompt then your current account must have had admin privileges. Standard accounts cannot do this, regardless of the method you use. The Command Prompt does not give you any special privileges.

It would do this immediately . . . To automate the logon process you can do this

1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard.

2. Type this command and press Enter: netplwiz

3. Tick the box that requires users to enter a password.

4. Single-click your account name.

5. Untick the box that requires users to enter a password.

6. Click OK.

7. Enter your password when prompted and click OK.

8. Make a note of the process for future reference.

Thanks Lyn, but there is no password asked for.

its just that when I try to download or even access secure web sites such as facebook, or here, or www.crucial.com IE or the Win7 refuses to allow me to see or download.

I could download to my laptop and then transfer the installation to my desktop and then install it..... But I'm not sure that would solve the problem.

Any ideas???

If you can't download another browser then you may need to re-install IE. IE is more of an App than a program so it can't be totally removed, but you can take steps to get it going again.

Go to Control panel - add/remove programs.

On the left hand side you will see "turn windows programs on or off", click on that and then go down to "internet explorer" (it will have a version number there as well.)

Uncheck the box - you will get a warning and a question as to whether you wish to proceed. Click yes and then go back to step 1 and repeat with the exception that you now check the box then click OK. This will reinstall IE.

No guarantee that this will fix your problem though.

Sounds like it might be a problem with the security settings in IE. Try going to settings in IE (the gear-shaped logo in the top far right) and select Internet Options. Once the Internet Options window comes up, select the Security tab and Internet (world logo). Then follow the instructions here:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-download-file-internet

Another option is (while still in the Internet Options window), go to Advanced Settings, and select "Restore Advanced Settings" to reset IE to its default settings. If this doesn't do the trick, then select Reset to restore all of IE setting to default - this should allow you to download.

If the above doesn't work, download a clean copy of IE to your laptop and copy the instal file to the new machine. Remove the existing copy of IE and install the new one.

Good luck!

I have had problems with IE and Java scripts etc. IE has many security settings - a real pain. Java can lock you down also.

I have no quick answers - I just kept poking until I got what I needed.

I have 2nd hand laptop with Win 7 I use for PowerPoint and although I can download from the net, I have to run PowerPoint as an administrator otherwise it falls over at the first video.

If you are the legal owner of the W7 software, I have found Microsoft phone help useful.

Did you check your security settings?

There might be blocked privileges. Check also if HttpS is enabled. (this can also being set in the router if it happens also with others computers on the same network)

Have you looked as to how downloads are actually handled by your IE? They may actually be downloaded, but have been put in the standard (to IE) place on the hard disk, without any further question as to "where" it should be placed. I think you will find it under "Tools" or "settings".

In my version of IE (I just looked) "Ctrl + J" will display downloads. That is the version standard with Win7. Try that and see if the downloads actually took place, but are somewhere you haven't yet looked at!!

Some browsers use a standard place to save automatically, I change that to "Always ask".....I find it better.

Assuming for a moment that that idea is not the problem here, then:-

The answer is simple, simply forget IE, its basically CRAP anyway!

I haven't used it in years, not since FireFox was made first available....

There are 32 and 64 bit versions of FireFox, the 64 version is called "Nightly" and has a different avatar....it appears to be the same otherwise, but both versions require that you change the setting to "always ask where to store downloads" as well.....

I also have Chrome installed "just in case!" I seldom use that either.....

You can download whatever you want Browser wise onto a USB stick on another computer and then install from the stick on the problem computer....

Best of luck.

Try downloading Firefox or Chrome on another system and transferring it via thumb drive or CD.

The other thing you might try is to run IE as administrator. You'd do this by right clicking on the shortcut. The menu that comes up should have "Run as administrator" as a choice.

I'd skip Firefox. Firefox works fine at first then it gradually becomes useless like IE. Chrome is the better choice and Chrome has a low resource requirement.

I completely disagree about your comments about FireFox.....

I have also never heard of such problems either....

I have been using it for so many years, that I simply forget just how many.....

I do allow updates though......

I used to use it all the time too, but these last couple years, it's been lagging, real laggy, so I stopped using it. Just like IE it took forever to load as well. With Chrome, it loads right up.

I use Firefox on a Ubuntu laptop and a Win7 laptop, for many years, no problems....fast and very effective. Kept updated.

Do remember that Chrome has had many problems with security. I have not been checking p recently to see if it has been fixed or not as I seldom use it....

A quick look around found this from October:-

http://venturebeat.com/2014/10/07/google-spends-over-75000-in-bounties-to-fix-159-security-issues-with-chrome-38-release/

That is waring enough for me....its become a target for hackers.....

And as an absolute last resort, since you say the hard drive looks like it's never been used since the installation of Win7, which would mean there is no irreplacable data on it, is to get a copy of Linux (my preferred style in Linux Mint, a development fork off of Ubuntu Linux that retained the 'desktop' interface when Ubuntu switch to the 'smartphone touchscreen' interface) and to a clean install, or even a dual-boot install, if there is information on the HDD you need to recover.

I agree. I have Linux Panda on a thumb drive somewhere. I had it for doing virus scans on XP.

Many thanks to you all for your help, I've now reset IE as BurtHickman suggested and its all back to normal, so I've downloaded and installed Chrome.
