Back when I was coming up in the tool and die trade, all of the craftsmen that I worked with and learned from had Gerstner tool chests proudly displayed on their benches, These beautifully crafted hardwood chests were considered symbolic of the pride and care they took in their work and in their precision tools, tools that they purchased or made themselves.
Now these craftsmen are long retired, and many have passed on to that Great Tool Room in the Sky. So what has become of their tool chests? At one time they were passed on to the next generation, but the tool and die trade has been slowly dieing in the US. There is no longer a next generation to pass them on to.
I hate to think that these tool chests and the tools that they contain are now sitting in basements, attics, or garages collecting dust, because the descendants of these craftsmen have no concept of what they represent.
