Images of Massive Volcano Eruption

04/23/2015 9:11 AM

Yesterday a massive volcanic eruption Happened in southern Chile, very close to the border of my country.

The Argentinian towns and little cities woke up today completely covered in a sulphur smelling dust.

Flights to that region have been delayed for safety reasons.

Take a look at these amazing pictures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MdUQY6xQG4

Lyn, that link is about an earthquake that occurred more than a year ago. It is the same country at least.

Perhaps a small admonishment is due for relying a bit too much on doing a cursory Web search? You do get credit for practicing what you preach, even if it is beyond the point of utility.

It's safe to prescribe a trip to Iceland for that particular ailment. Come back, Eyjafjallajokull. All is forgiven!

So did this one blow enough ash and whatnot into the atmosphere to achieve any measurable climatic variances?

Just curious because if the climate nazis end up with another cooler than predicted year they are going to screaming foul and blaming this for it.

The volcano seemed to have taken a rest, cause there has been no eruptions since yesterday or so. All the cities in that are area now covered with a couple of inches of a very volatile and abrasive dust. Car mechanics will get very happy in some months from now! Neighbours are shovelling their roofs and sidewalks hoping it will be it. Here in Buenos Aires (some 1000 miles N-E) sky got grey yesterday due to the ashes. Flights to the south are still cancelled.

Nature is very un-ecological!

R&ddo isc,

If I recall correctly, English is not your primary language. Your writing is excellent, so I am a little uncertain. I thought you would want the following brought to your attention:

"...very volatile and abrasive dust...'

'Volatile' is not the right word. 'Volatile' describes something that readily changes, as in a substance that can readily be vaporized, or a crowd on the brink of riot, or a market with rapid large price swings. There is a more rare meaning for volatile that means 'ready to take flight' but it is essentially the same as 'volant' which describes something with open wings....which doesn't work for dust.

I think you probably intend to describe the very fine particle size that makes it easily airborne. Is that correct?

.

On a different subject, how is your boat doing? How have your dingy winch and anchor chain projects functioned?

Hi Truth! Yes, EN is not my primary language ... and some times I perpetrate some OOPS like I did using the word "volatile": despite your explanation about the meaning of this word, (which I appreciate) I searched some other sources and "my" meaning was always ranked in the last position ... therefore I should have used a more appropriate word!

My brain, which happens to be quite autonomous when I write probably made a literal translation from SP into EN causing this glitch.

My boat is still on dry dock (I never thought it would be so much work)... but will be probably ready in a couple of months. (Thanks for asking!)

Sun Spot Run! Actually sun spot activity and global mean temperature are very strongly correlated. I think more sun spots equates to hot and dry times in the northern hemisphere, as in La Nina. El Nino is the opposite part of the cycle, where it stays cooler and rains more. We love El Nino here in Lubbock, TX.

I am more concerned with the net export of Chile's Carmenera and Cabernet Savignon wine production. Maybe the extra sulfur helps with any root rot problems they could have at lower elevations, but Chile might not have the same indiginous diseases the vines have in Texas.

I have searched the web to find the "indigo¡us disease vines have in Tx", having found nothing about that issue. Can you please be a little more specific? ;-) Great that you like Chilean wines.... but if you like really good Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, you should try wines produced this side of the border (Argentina) !!!! :-)

Malbec and Bonarda come to mind when I think of Argentinean wines. Kind of like Barolo and Barbaresco come to mind for Italian wines. I'm sure Italy and Argentina produce some good wines modeled after wines made famous elsewhere, it seems like a narrowing of experience.

.

Well, like my mother would always say, 'de gustibus non est disputandum'.

.

I would regret it later if I didn't ask..., do you have any recommendations for native Argentinean wines beyond Malbec or Bonarda, that are worth experiencing?

Argentina, yeah, yeah, I am afraid of all those Nazis down there using Nazi girls to stomp the grapes. The typical disease of grapes in the lower elevations of Texas are the fungus also known as cotton root rot. The one that can affect any crop anywhere is Pierce's disease (PD) caused by a xylem-limited bacterium that clogs the vascular tissue of susceptible grape cultivars (according to Jim Kamas of TAMU Texas AgriLife Extension Service).

https://winegrapes.tamu.edu/grow/disease.html

There is the link to all the ones known in Texas to affect either yield or quality. We already have all the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot anyone would care to imbibe being made here on the Llano Estacado, and it has received many stars.

I know this. Operation paperclip was the main thrust of this effort to recruit/recover as many Nazi scientists as possible to work on our alien technology. LOL

These scientists contributed to the development of a state of the art industry in my country, as they did in the USA and former Soviet Union. Kurt Tank, a former designer from Focke Wulf gave birth to the Pulqui ("arrow" in the language of a native tribe), which is a locally built (1950´s) reactor plane that happened to be similar to the MIG 1 .... which is no coincidence (I guess)

The beginning of this video is very impressive. It's obviously timelapse, but I was unable to find the frame rate.

Here is another good video of the event:

Frame rate is very high. A friend of mine who lives down there sent me a video he shot and it looks like a dense column of ashes. Lightnings sue to static electricity seen during the night are really impressive!

The volcano "Calbucó" has rested for some days returning to activity this morning. Here are some images taken on the Chilean side of the border: https://youtu.be/X2eGO9rYGHE Ashes are expected to fall tonight on the Argentinean towns located along the border, at a distance of about 100 miles from the volcano.
