Let me get this straight,

  • U r the length
  • B the dimension
  • It sounds like U don't know what to B

Did I get the information correct?Open your textbook and read what your instructor told you to read then you may find the answer. If this isn't a homework question, then call the manufacturer of the thermowell!

Do you know how to use a telephone? That's where I'd start, then, I'm funny that way.

Where you need a short, fat thermowell. I haven't scrounged any catalogs to see if that is a common offering.

To make the ratio U/B smaller has positive and negative impacts:

Positive: the own frequency will be higher and the flow force will be under circumstances reduced.

Negative: the temperature in the measuring zone will be modified and this could lead to errors, the measuring zone will be nearer to the wall and to the boundary layer where the temperature gradient is higher so that this as well could lead to errors.

When I mention errors I think about the difference between indicated temperature and real one in the fluid flow.

You should see the device as a body receiving heat via its surface and leading it to the out side via the surfaces in contact with the wall (threads, seat aso). The internal temperature is function of the heat flow balance.
