You may have hurt her feelings.

What is her brand/model# and how does she communicate, when she does?

Flat battery, trying to communicate at same time as another, excessive distance for signal transmission, excessive system noise for receiver to recognise "incoming" message, intermittent connection (anywhere in system), ...........

Here are a few of my suggestions for your problem:

Bad wires, bad connector, bad software, bad meter, bad boy, bad power, too long of a cable run, improper VSWR, ESO, sun spots, RTFM, overheating, water infiltration, fungus, tin whiskers, bounced check, data storm, denial of service attack, unhappy bit spiders, you moved the coconuts.

You forgot potentially faulty meter.

I took that to mean faulty measurement or diagnostic device.

Pretty good list of possibilities! We could add Data Crash, Duplicate IP address, prankster, moody meter, cosmic rays (knocks bits from 1 to 0 in RAM), Nearby RF sources, sprung RJ45 spring type connector, strong wind on a loose mounting, oxidation of contacts, kinked cable, and the list goes on, and on, and on...

I have a particular answer for a particular energy meter.

Only who will tell that it is definitely the same particular type of meter?

Is it a type with CT's and receiver?

You'll need to dedicate a port and configure your router to allow communication.

Are you allowed to tell us e.g. make and model?

The polling map/table for all instruments in the loop is not compatible with the loop interrogation communication speed? (Determine polling sequence & priority assignment, identify amount of time needed for interrogating each device, do the math and verify all devices can be polled within one network communication cycle.)

Too many collisions occurring in your network communications? (Bad fiber? Bad copper? Excessive conductor distance? Intermittent device issues? Wrong network topology for polling application? Too many devices in the network? Bad communications equipment?)

High db loss in the communications signal? (Poor connections? Bad equipment? Bad polling sequence? Low voltage supply to communications equipment and/or other devices in the system?)

Would this meter be using your fire damaged Profibus cable (that you don't know how to test) by any chance?

  • A loose wire.
  • A faulty meter.
  • A faulty input.
  • A mismatch between the meter and the input.
  • An unwillingness to follow the equipment instructions.
  • An error in the software.
  • An error in the scanning arrangements.
  • Temperature beyond limits.
  • The phases of the moon.
  • The tides.
  • A rodent's activities.
  • Etc., etc.

As usual,

1. Has it ever worked correctly?

2. If so, what has changed which might be causing this?

3. Can you connect it by itself to see if it works then?

After 15 posts, in 24 hours, I highly doubt, gupta769 is going to respond.

OK, the guy made a few mistakes on his post, primarily not providing pertinent information.

Sometimes pulling a Patton works, sometimes it doesn't.

There should be a policy of some sort in place.

When a scenario such as this happens, and there is no response by the o p in say 24 hours, an automated message should be sent to o p , and the conversation removed from the cr4 daily digest listing.

Re: Energy Meter Not Communicating

Yeah, or posts should have some sort of 'editor review' before they are compiled to the daily digest. Even something as simple as: 12 hours before the digest is posted, the server sends an e-mail to 3-4 editors (to cover cases where someone may be sick or on vacation) with links to the potential items for the daily digest. If there are x slots for featured posts, then there would be 2xpotential submissions, listed in order of priority. so items 1 to x are scheduled to get posted, while items x+1 to 2x are the 'reserves' that will be moved up the chain if items above them get flagged for 'do not put in digest.' With that 12 hour lead time, the editors can make their decisions and flag the ones that shouldn't be on the digest well before posting time.

I believe there's a way for users to 'vote down' a thread to try and keep it from becoming a 'headline,' but it's pretty obvious that that system isn't working as well as it should, either from technical issues, lack or participation, or lack of knowledge in HOW to participate.

Re: Energy Meter Not Communicating

I think the 'keep from headlines' function is part of the 'thread rating' system, items below a certain rating aren't supposed to show up on the front page. However, it appears that items with a ZERO rating (as in 'nobody has rated it yet') are allowed through, on the grounds that it hasn't gotten any 'poor' (1-2 star) votes yet.

So, if everyone was participating in the thread rating, we'd be seeing 4-5 star threads features, with 3-star threads showing up on a slow day, and the 1-2 star threads would be sitting quietly in the background, and not attracting sarcasm like they do now.

Seriously, when poorly worded questions and people asking for detailed instructions how to do things they're clearly not qualified to do safely are the things making the 'Featured Articles' section of the Digest, it makes the whole site look bad.
