Computer Problem

07/25/2015 1:21 PM

Something is ailing my computer, and I don't know how to fix it. I do not have the icon for reserving Win 10; apparently because the windows update KB3035583 is not installed. It is among the 29 (last time I checked) optional updates which refuse to install either as a group or singly. The error given is 8020003F. Does anyone know what this means, and what I need to do? I tried Google, and don't really understand what it said. When I upgrade to Win 10, will the installation fix the error, or will it remain to bug me and maybe keep Win 10 from installing? Thanks.

ou have my sincere condolences for being infected with Windows 8.

Is it 8 and not 8.1?

I don't think 8 will update automatically.

I have Win 8.1 and the icon on my screen. I'm not sure Win 10 will be better.

I do know that all updates will be installed even if you don't want them.

Microsoft has my extreme hatred for the things they've done to their customers for money.

This may be a virus infection or just another "gift" from the Gates Gang.

Try here:

Windows Updates fail to install in Windows 10 / 8 / 7

This is all heading toward the day when we will be forced to rent operating systems and use the cloud, no matter what.

Then if you don't pay the monthly ransom.....................POOF...........all your stuff goes away.

Think I'm kidding? Just wait.

Lyn, I'm running Win 7. Plan to upgrade to 10 maybe Jan, hopefully after many bug fixes. Will be trying the link later--Thanks. I realize you have a great dislike for MS!

when the update comes I'll be passing. at one time I had XP and it worked very well. it was sold to me as "ready for a free Vista upgrade" when it became available. I added the Vista and instantly hated it. I couldn't get the XP back. long story short I had to get another PC.....so now I'm reading if you accept10 it will work awhile then Microsoft holds your machine for ransom if you want it to continue to work.........I'm assuming once loaded my perfectly good copy of 7 will never be retrieved. Microsoft bringing new meaning to "free"

I liked XP too, and held out for a long time before getting 7. Now, I am very happy with 7. I have used 8.1, and used it long enough to be able to adapt to the different navigation. If I decide to get it before 10, I know I can make it resemble 7 navigationally.

To OP - this sounds like you may have to do an install "repair" - in BIOS, set your CD/DVD drive as first boot device, insert your OS disk, reboot the computer, and follow the prompts after that. The BIG problem is that you may have to install a lot of updates, which will take TIME. Wanted to put some emoticons here, but it doesn't work. Using IE. Go figure.

Unless you want to start paying Microsoft for the 2nd year of use (ad infinitum), then you might want steer clear of W10. I for one will go straight to some version of Linux, before I let that happen. Unfortunately, that is the direction they are herding us, to a pay, or don't play business model. I am not happy now, that the vast majority of the apps on my tablet are completely useless, unless I have connectivity. This will be the wave of the future, if we just lay down and take it.

In fact, unless you have to use a proprietary windows only software, then you might want to consider Linux now.

Remember that MS has said IF you upgrade to W10 within the first year from W7 or W8.1, then further updates to W10 will be free as long as you keep the same computer. For me that seems to put off any Linux (or whatever) decisions until I get a new computer. For the rest of you, IF you are thinking of getting a new computer, do it now before you install W10.

Folk here talking about XP in the past tense.

I'm still running it with the last update installed. Only annoyance is the MSE popup telling me that it's no lnger supported when I boot up, otherwise not having frequent updates seems to have made it quite stable. Maybe slowing down though.

I'll be getting one of these or similar soon...

Under USD200.

I can get any OS I want. I liked XP but that's not an option now.

Any recommendations for a new OS? This WOS quasi-rental drift seems like a drag.

" I liked XP but that's not an option now." If you look on eBay you will find any number of genuine XP installation discs.

I still have the XP discs too. But it XP no longer supported, no updates. So installing it would just make for an outdated new PC with no way of upgrading ( I still don't know why the constant OS upgrades...)

You probably have a virus or 3. Get AVG and BitDefender free versions or something else that will be recommended here.

Then maybe recover your system with the recovery manager. When I got my Win 8.1, I used an old hard drive for a recovery disk. I have not used it. As an alternative, un-install every application that you have installation disks for, then try the updates, then re-install the applications. I think you need to fix this before upgrading windows.

One of the things I noticed about W7 was it will download and "install" a dozen updates at a time. (unless you have it set to do it daily) Some of those updates need to have a system restart in order to complete the installation process. What gets frustrating is that some updates depend on others already being installed before they can be applied.

Also understand that I do not shut down my system.

On my Win7 unit for daily use I'll give you this example, Let's say I got 12 updates on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning I saw the notification and restarted as directed. It did it's usual "installing updates" screen and restarted. When I checked the update center it showed three "failed". So I go to the action center and have it redownload and install and then restart again and now is shows only one "failed". Then simply repeat the above and all is well now.

Once I figured this out I set the update process as part of the maintenance schedule that runs at 3am everyday and I have no had this problem since.
