Don't Want Skype Until I Want It

07/29/2015 4:42 AM

This is a typical issue, but I wanted to both ask for help and maybe have a little discussion.

My OS is Win7. One of the "non-critical" updates was Skype, so I decided to install it anyway thinking I might use it in the future. Install worked fine.

Now, Skype loads every time on startup. I CAN turn it off from the icon in the notification area after it has loaded, but I don't want to do that every time I start my computer. Going into the (almost nonexistent) settings, I can find no way to make this not load on startup.

Without having to go into registry settings, does anyone know how to make this NOT open on startup without uninstalling it? I would like to have the program available, but I don't want it to be open, taking up resources if I'm not currently using it!

This is the kind of thing that really pisses me off about MS!

Programs that hijack my choices really make me want to break things!

Looks like you have to create an account first or use an existing MS -BS account to log on. There you find more settings to switch of the start with MS -BS.

If I have to have a Micro-f--in--soft account to be able to choose whether to load this damn thing at startup or not, I will never use Skype. It has been uninstalled. I don't need it that bad!

I don't even know what Skype is? I will ask my 8 year old granddaughter, she has all the answers.

I have found that the easiest way to "correct" such problems is to use "Backup and Restore". Your machine automatically generates a "Restore Point" on a periodic basis. As soon as you find you have a rogue program use Restore to go back to the date before you noticed the problem and follow the instructions. You won't shouldn't lose any data, but you should be back to where you were before you did the download.

Make this a habit; Always create a Restore Point before you download a program, and never accept the default download/install now choice- Always select Custom Install so that you have control over all the other crap that will otherwise be automatically installed/set to run on startup.

Creating a Restore Point is easy, hit the Windows icon (Start) and type Create Restore in the Search Programs and Files box that opens, then click on "Create a Restore Point" and follow the directions (you can also get there through the Control Panel). Use the same method to get to an earlier Restore Point by typing "restore point" in the search box.

Fear not, nothing will happen to your computer until you actually click through all the instructions and warnings. If you're not sure hit "Cancel" and start over.

Thats basically what I do whenever I setup a computer or laptop with a fresh system load. Once all the programs i want are in place I make master backup point. FOr the more used computers I have I also have been making shadow copies of the freshly setup hard drives as well for those odd but apparently unavoidable situations where reverting to a restore point does not fix a problem or the computer decides that I am no longer its administrator and does not allow me to go to a restore point.

Yes, I make a habit out of knowing where my restore points are and if I think I may have an issue, I will manually create one. My system itself is fine.

My real question (and maybe I wasn't clear enough), was how can I make this program not open on startup? I can manually close it after startup and do, because I don't want something I'm not using taking up resources. I would like to have it installed in case I need it at some point, but would like the option of manually opening it.

Moot point now as I have deleted it!

Mike

Try CCleaner from Piriform. I use it to clean the trash. Does have a tool sectiom. Under the start up tab there is a list of programs that are enable during start up. Just change the setting for Skype to disable.

Heck of allot easier then searching thru MS file to turn it off.

IOBit also has this function. It will also delay start up of these non critical apps.

Open Skype

Tools, Options, General Settings, Uncheck "Start Skype when I start Windows", Save, Close. And Bill's your uncle!

Seriously though, Skype since Microsoft bought it is useless.

In the version I had at least, the "Start Skype when I start Windows" option was nowhere to be found. And I never had an uncle Bill!

Savvy, why do I get this dialog when I press <Enter> in my post:

And I guess I can't even post images. Emoticons don't work either. I am using IE 11.0.21. These things work when I am at work (using IE).

Is there a solution?

How about downloading the latest version of skype (7.6.65.105 what I have) with the "Start Skype when I start Windows" option and follow the previous instructions? Weird way of doing it and a pain in the proverbial, but it should work.

I had the same problem with Itunes. I had to click "Start", "Run", and type in "msconfig" and unclick "Itunes Helper" under the Startup tab. I hope this helps.

I use Revo Uninstaller. I'm not lazy, but like the most efficient way to accomplish a task. There are probably many other programs starting in the background, which are only needed occasionally that you can start when needed. Download and install Revo from this site, http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

The free version is excellent. You'll probably have a quicker boot time also.

Then open it, go to tools, then click Autorun. Review what starts in the background, unclick what you don't want. Close Revo Uninstaller.

Next time you start the computer, these items will not start, unless you open them.

Thanks Mike, I will try it. I am really being particular right now because of this computer I've just built. I want to keep it as "pure" as possible.

Boot time right now is 37s!

Now, after a program install, when it says "To complete installation, you must reboot your computer", I don't mind so much!

Mikerho, just curious if that solved your problem?

Before installing it , learn a little bit about it first.

I too am interested in how this effects your boot time and probably general operational lethargy.

I am try to keep my XPpro working forever if possible. Sloth is creeping in, XP is no longer supported.

I am waiting for a friends report of his W10 installation onto 2 new miniPCs.

Blither over.
