Old reference to "white line fever", driving at night, the mind is mesmerised by the dotted white line down the middle of the road. Seem to recall that is why most of the center line markings are now yellow.

I think it also had to do with the rhythmic repetition of the stripes, like a slow-motion strobe effect inside the brain.

Very interesting... I learned something today.

A similar phenomenon that I have noticed is when I get totally engrossed in a drawing or an engineering problem. Sometimes 2-3 hours will pass in what seems like 10 minutes. I glance at my watch and can't believe it. I wonder if that's a form of hypnosis.

My daughter majored in Theatre in college and she was in several big plays. They would rehearse a few nights each week for a couple months and on the Saturday before opening night, they would typically have a 12-hour marathon rehearsal. I thought that sounded horrible but she always said that the time really flew by. Twelve hours felt like only an hour or two. I remember telling her that if that was the case, she was probably in the right major. I'm sure they would have seemed like 50-hour rehearsals to me!

Flow is a wonderful feeling, very 'zen.' Some people call it 'Heterodyning,' after the main character in the Girl Genius webcomic⁽¹⁾, although I prefer to call it 'sipping from the Well of Inspiration/the Madness Well,' (Same well, two sides of the same sign) since I tend to pattern my 'public persona' as somewhere between 'wacky professor' and 'mad scientist.' (There have been plenty of role models from my youth to base myself on, Phinneus J. Whoopee, Doc Brown, Egon Spengler, to name just a few. I was one of those kids who never went through the 'I wanna be a fireman/cowboy/policeman/astronaught/football player' phase, I pretty much started out with 'I wanna be a scientist' and stayed there, until I learned about Engineering, which still matched my childhood goals about being a 'smart guy' instead of a 'laboring guy')

Notes:

1. A 'gaslamp fantasy'⁽²⁾ story about Europe controlled by mad scientists, written and drawn by Phil and Kaja Folio.
2. It's like Steampunk without the gloom-and-doom that the -punk suffix tends to add. The Big Empire enforcing a modicum of peace between all the mad scientists (or 'Sparks,' as they are called in-universe) has only one law imposed on the member states: Don't Make Me Come Over There. That's it, just 'don't fight so loudly with your neighbors, or oppress your own people so harshly, that I need to fly my castle over there and 'sort things out.'⁽³⁾
3. It also makes for a stock opening line when he *DOES* show up somewhere to clean up a mess: "I have one rule, just ONE, and you STILL managed to screw it up..." In a world of mad scientists, hammy, over-the-top, scenery-chewing cliches are so commonplace, the populace doesn't bat an eyelash anymore, unless they have to dodge debris or something.

And I really enjoyed Humomgulus. "HUMONGULUS CAN LIFT SCENERY WHILE CHEWING ON IT! HUMONGULUS CAN MILK GIANTEST OF GIANT COWS!! HUMONGULUS HAS NO INDOOR VOICE!!! HUMONGULUS IS LARGEST LARGE HAM THERE IS!!!!" I hope we get to see him again, even if he was just a glorified elevator operator/elevator machinery.

Not really sure to be honest. I enjoy the whole comic and all of its characters.

With that comic I sort of see myself fitting into a world like that a bit too well being I have found myself doing AE stuff just for sh!ts and giggles curiosity that I later found out people with doctorates in physics working at universities were doing as serious work and having great difficulty with.

Same here, I love the whole cast, even Baron Wolfenback. For all that he seems to be a despot and a tyrant, he has a noble goal, a Pax Europa, where the people do not to live in daly terror of some Spark or other wandering in and making everyone miserable. Good Goal, MIGHT be a bit heavy-handed in implementing it. Then again, sometimes you need to kill a Spark two or three times before he'll pay attention to what you have to say. (Although just threatening death is usually enough for nobility, since once they've been officially dead, they are stripped of their titles and wealth, which gets handed down to their inheritors, even if they come back to life afterwards. It even seems perfectly reasonable in-universe: "Dad, you died. I'm King now, go and enjoy your retirement. You can finally build that Clank army you wanted, and use it to kick Uncle Drosslemeyer out of Whowouldbuildthisinaswamp Castle. That would have started a war back when you were in charge, now it's just two back-from-the-dead ex-nobles having fun."

I'm thinking this topic off shoot is almost worthy of its own thread relating to who likes what silly adult or not so adult orientated comics cartoon or whatever else that just makes them feel like a kid for a little while now and then.

You think those movies are funny now, watch them with your daughter, and ask her about the scenes she laughs at that you don't understand. So many bits from 'inside' the world of greasepaint and limelight.)

Ha! Ha! I'll try it and get back to you... When I'm with my wife and daughter, there's plenty of apparently humorous stuff that goes right over my head, especially British comedy. Our brains are wired differently.

I used to come in to work, start working and before I knew it, I'd look up and second shift would be walking in, I'd asked why are you here so early, , their response was, it 5 minutes to 4:00. Almost time to go home, I loved that.

Then I looked at my sandwich that I made that morning with Jimmy Deans Turkey, on a hoagie bun, with tomatoes, lettuce, little onion, butter and mayo........ And I get real hungry, so I took that last 5 minutes and eat my lunch.

That's called sleeping on the job.

I remember as a kid (vaguely) riding a bicycle along the very edge of a curb and having a "lockup moment" or "feedback loop". Perhaps this is related, or just a result of a mental condition.

And as your laying on the couch, the psychiatrist asks you, "Do any other of your family members also suffer from mental disorders?

And you reply, "No, not really, .... Matter of fact, they rather enjoy it."

Many years ago, I worked in R&D with a guy who would often get so engrossed in an idea that he became totally unaware of things going on around him, even while he was walking down the hallway. He had a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, and he was a genius. He had an amazing, detailed memory for the darndest things. His shirt was always un-tucked and his hair was always messed up. He always wore a baggy, rumpled-up suit. If you passed by him in the hallway, he often didn't even notice you were there. Heck, there were times he probably wouldn't have noticed a naked lady or dead skunk in the hallway! That kind of focus can be pretty dangerous.

I haven't thought about this guy in years... This discussion made me remember him!
