Hazardous Area Instruments

08/05/2015 4:23 AM

For one our current projects for FPSO topside modules as per HAC drawing the area is classified as Zone 2 as per the project specification all filed instruments need to certified as Exia Suitable for Zone 1

We have some analysers from Emerson like (pH,ORP...) the certification is for Zone 1 Exia but the enclosure material is polycarbonate

Customer does not accept polycarbonate and he wants SS316 as minimum.

Vendor is proposing place this transmitter inside a noncertified SS316 JB with transparent cover and with IP66 integrity

Is this accepted or we need to get one more certification as whole unit ?

In a sensible world, that would be acceptable; however, you still need to satisfy the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction).

... and you need your customer's approval. Get them and the engineer of record on the project to sign off on this approach.

To not have to bother with additional certifications, put the entire unit (with its plastic cover) inside the SS enclosure.

pH and ORP don't need analysers, just regular instruments.

  • Move the instruments to a non-hazardous zone and connect them to the hazardous area equipment using extended cables.
  • Ask the Client for a list of type-approved equipment, i.e. the materials kept as standardised stock spares for other, similar installations.

Singapore has to have codes and standards which govern hazardous area instrumentation.

You are responsible for meeting all the requirements of the codes and standards AND satisfying your customer's desires and requirements.

If you are not qualified to negotiate this with the local authorities and your customer, a hired consultant is in order.

Good luck.

Why the transparent cover?
