Social Media Behaviour of Engineers

08/17/2015 5:42 AM

Hello engineering community,

I am currently completing my studies at Rotterdam Business School. I am conducting research into the digital behaviour of engineers & the role of social media.

This survey is designed to gain insight into your digital behaviourism, more specifically:

(1) Internet preferences

(2) Social Media patterns

(3) Professional usage of digital(online) medium(s).

The survey contains a variety of questions about your daily online activities, strictly in a fashion which makes us understand a pattern, without giving out any personal information about yourself.

The following questionnaire will require approximately 15 minutes to complete.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/V2BC9FW

I highly appreciate your willingness to participate in this survey. Thank you in advance.

You may have overestimated the forum's, "social media behavior" and its "willingness to participate in this survey".

Gave up answering survey when I got "! This question requires an answer" for questions A) I didn't want to answer B) I didn't answer because they weren't applicable, and C) to which I'd actually typed an answer in the 'other' box.

Suggest you re-design your survey - it's not a fekkin' IRS form.

I know this is a homework assignment and we are not your lab rats.

"digital behaviourism[sic]"

Well, I am either actively connected to the internet or I am off.

I guess when Apple finally releases a quantum Mac Pro I can be both on and off the internet at the same time, but there would be no way to be certain without disturbing the whole entangled affair.

If you studied my pattern of internet use I suspect it would produce a moire pattern.

Unfortunately, I really have better things to do with the next 15 minutes of my life, but I sincerely wish yours will be insightful and rewarding. Best of luck.

I can give you the result of your survey in one sentence...Engineers in social media forums are uncooperative unless we are telling you what to do!

Are is not capitalized, it should be: are

LOL, I did that because you spent the time to do what you did, this is social media for engineers...

This post says more about the social media behaviour of the original poster rather than that of any respondents, as the aggregated response cannot be assessed as statistically significant!

As CR4 is not a homework cheat site (see CR4 Rules of Conduct), any perceived invitation to respond is declined.

Having been abused by a rowdy gang of engineers in my youth, I feel that any comment I make will be biased. They still owe me that paper rout money.

Your request and survey has a flawed base assumption and the data you are collecting is thus compromised.

Not everyone on this forum is an Engineer!!

Engineering is donkey's job. Engineers have to sweat at their factories, design offices. Always busy with solving the problems. How much time is left for them to engage in social media?

You mean like subconsciously selecting only the engineers that have mismatched socks and pocket protectors, from all engineers?

Oh, please, let's not get into clothing habits. Unless we want to start talking about wearable engineering. And I'm not interested in the Apple wrist doo-dad. I'm more interested in this kind of wearable engineering:

Affordable prosthetics

Besides, don't all engineers who wear socks wear mismatched socks??

It isn't so much an occupation that makes a difference, it is a personality type, how much interaction one has with social media, whether someone sees any value in social media, etc., that depends how much or whether someone uses social media.

A high number of engineers are; Melancholy/C/Beaver type of personality. Detail oriented, reserved.

Quite right. It's just that often we are drawn to what fits us best skill and personality- wise. There for sure aren't any hard and fast rules but we're usually more comfortable and fulfilled in particular areas of occupation.

I saw this illustrated one time in a business environment and a talk by Dr. Robert Rohm who has developed the DISC personality type training. He had everyone in the room, probably 4K people, move to different quadrants of the room depending upon if they were; outgoing or reserved or task oriented or people oriented. He then asked for those who worked in math and sciences. A high majority of those people were in the reserved/task oriented quadrant (C).
