RHS or PFC Which has Greater Load Bearing Capacity

09/01/2015 10:39 AM

Can someone point me at formula used to calculate cantilevered load capacity for 100 x 50 PFC versus 100 x 50 x 5 RHS please ?

I want to compare load capacity for 500 mm of cantilevered beam using either of the above.

thankyou

ps . no its not a homework assignment , just modifying a small truck body :)

Well, the answer is yes. People who sell these things can. You've only got to pick up the phone and talk to some of them.

? That's not an answer to the question Most steel merchants are unlikely to answer that these days due to liability concerns .

Nonsense. Standardised steel sections have published mechanical properties that the designer can use prior to selecting the right material for the job. You also have the option of talking to those outside your word "most". Now, go away and do the work. I'm not going to do if for you, as that might make you lazy, and we don't want that, do we?

I interpret your answer as intended to be condescending. Don't fall off your high hobby horse son Typical of a few members who must be here for the ego stroking

They are excellent topics for Google searches....

thanks but i can find tables of beam mass with google

no mechanical properties are shown in your link

Yes i already tried googling online beam load calculators but they either dont include cantilever design or dont include RHS .

I'd leave the truck body alone.

I don't think you're up to the task, unless you can get someone to do the work for you.

Yes I'm surprised that site doesn't give mechanical properties, without that the data given is of limited use. I have it in a book, but I'm sure it's available online, just needs finding.

The one with greater section modulus (Z) will carry higher load. The one with higher 2nd moment of area (I) will have lower deflection, but for a cantilever 500mm it's unlikely to be limited by deflection. In any case, the one with higher Z likely to also have higher I.

For a 500N load, PFC would be 13mm deflection, 16mm on RHS, best tool I've found search www.engineeringtoolbox.cantilever-beams
