90 Ford Ranger 2.9L

09/01/2015 4:33 PM

Truck wont start unless I run a jumper wire from the positive side of battery to the red wire on the fuel injector harness. Relays all have power and I am getting fuel up to the schrader valve

Re: 90 Ford Ranger 2.9L

I just went through this with my relative's Ford Ranger truck of the same year.

There is a master fuse located on the main fuse panel under the hood on the driver side fender.

There is a heavy black wire that comes up from the bottom of the engine compartment and attaches to a small rectangular fuse on the inside of the fuse panel on the engine side.

This fuse powers all of the Ranger's auxiliary power devices and if open, will keep the truck from starting.

Look closely as it is well camouflaged.

I would buy two fuses in case the fault that caused the fuse to open is still present in the electrical system.

In my case my relative screwed up and had to have a breathalyzer unit installed on the truck and after the installation the truck would not run. He had to tow the vehicle home after the installer, a Ford dealership, and two aftermarket repair shops couldn't find the problem.

The cause? The breathalyzer installer crossed the negative and positive leads on the breathalyzer.

If the master fuse is intact with power present in and out of it I would look at replacing the ignition switch contact block. It is mounted on the steering column under the driver's side dash. Very hard to access.

Hope this helps.

Breathalyzer?

Too much ethanol in the gas?

OK but I'm still curious about what a breathalyzer is in a vehicle. I suppose it could be to prevent the engine starting when you've had a few, but I've not heard of it before. BTW maybe the installer was half-p****d when he fitted it!

Thanks for the answer but I have power to everything, except the fuel injectors. the fuel pump works, I am getting spark to the plugs. all the fuses on the panel have power, The relays all have power.so I am lost on what to check next.

You have to trace the back on the dead line until you find the juice...it might be the relay for the fuel system from the ECM...

Do you think it could be the EMC itself just not sending juice to it. Those things are kind of spendy even at junkyards and the id model I have no one has anyway

It might be the EEC relay, if you have one, I'm not sure on that engine....

"The EEC Power Relay not only supplies battery voltage to the Fuel Injection Computer (also known as the E.E.C. Electronic Control Assembly), but also supplies power to the fuel injectors, the fuel pump relay, and a few other emissions related solenoids.

The EEC Power Relay is easy to recognize because it's usually a Brown color. If the EEC Power Relay has already been replaced... you can still recognize it by its Brown colored connector."

Does it have a tachymetric relay which is intended to cut power to the injectors if the engine stops (in an accident). If that relay has failed the engine will not start!

Just make sure it doesn't touch the other wire...

If all else fails get the wiring diagram and trace out the problem....make sure all the wiring connections are clean, I always use a little conductive grease to maintain a good connection....
