Early Morning Launches are Great

09/02/2015 7:16 AM

Great views when Cape Canaveral is dark but sunrise hits a launching rocket. This is one of the unusual launches that are both beautiful and educational. The concepts of "layer of atmosphere" and "edge of space" usually take a bit of trust but on a morning like this you can see where the edge is. As the rocket passed through the edge of our atmosphere there was a huge change in the size and shape of the smoke trail. Since I was in the dark and the rocket was in the sunlight it made for a great show.

I forgot about todays launch and only accidentally saw it when I was taking things out to my car. I ran inside to get my camera. Thus: 1) I missed the early part of the launch and 2) Florida's humid air fogged up my "fresh from the house" camera lens and none of my pictures are very sharp. Very sad since it was very beautiful with sharp details that were lost in my pictures.

Rocket: Atlas V
Launched from: Cape Canaveral Florida
Launched: Wednesday 09-02-2015 6:18 AM
Sunrise at Cape Canaveral: 7:01 AM

Launch: 43 minutes before official sunrise

Bruce, from down here the views were spectacular. Everyone that saw it has be amazed at the beauty of this pre dawn launch.

SE, That video was impressive. I was surprised to learn that the latest Saturn V has a back up camera.

Great shots, in spite of the cold to hot problem with the camera!

Out here in "Flyover, Texas" we don't get to see much of that, just airliners or military jets leaving crisp vapor trails in upper atmosphere. And to think most of them are flying under the height above sea level of Everest peak, really does baffle a flat lander like me. Just going to the mountains in New Mexico (which I have not in a long time), makes me somewhat giddy.
