The problem will be, as it always is, when someone dies from one of these the lawyers and human rights groups will want it banned.

No way. This requires too much information processing and too much time to implement.

My fair city considers anybody wielding a knife a lethal threat, subject to lethal neutralization if they are within 22 feet of the officer, or officers. That's 22 feet.

The policy in most cities is, shoot first, sort out the facts later.

" I was in fear for my life" is common justification for use of lethal force.

22 feet at full charge is close enough to get to you before you will get your weapon unholstered.

Then again, anyone that is attacking/threatening a police officer with a weapon has no reasonable expectation to be treated with kindness.

Reminds me of a cartoon in which a father confronts a burglar, and the father's son says, "Squirt him, Dad!" Or flower power pistols. On the other hand, maybe that's all some persons should be trusted with.

When the criminals have "less lethal" devices so should the police. Until then...

Why not just do it properly and have non lethal hand guns for the police as the standard weapon that are designed to incapacitated properly.

An incapacitated attacker cannot shoot or stab you if they are incapacitated.

That or a properly designed dual role weapon that is both light and effective. Leave the big movie shootouts to SWAT or the heavier pieces stored in the trunk, the average officer in the street isn't Frank McClane afterall.
