What is it? - Because I Don't Know!

09/13/2015 9:29 PM

Tearing down my father-in-law's cabin on the river (middle USA) I saw this 'nest'? At first I thought of termites, but did not see anything on line like this.

The brown part looked like the fur from a vintage teddy bear. Then there were orange/red globules of ?nectar?

Really saw no other insects around ....

Loops like a fungus. Are there conifers near the cabin?

There are cedar trees near. This was on a stringer under 3-4+ layers of flooring inside and old building. Nearly no air source......

Do you think a bug from the cedars??

I suspect it is the fruiting body of a mycorrhyzal fungus that often forms a symbiosis with conifers.

It might be of the genus Hydnellum, or something similar.

Either that or just at a different stage of maturity/decomposition.

No surprise it is a fungus.

The cabin has been flooded several times over the many years and I know mold is in the walls. Thus the reason for our current destruction!! (face mask in place)
