CAD Symbols Library Resource

09/15/2015 10:22 AM

Had a catastrophic failure on my home computer a week ago (the one that I use for side design jobs) and unfortunately I did not invoke the same back-up methodology I use for independent jobs (which I burn to both CD-ROM and Flash for archiving).

Rather I have Tape Backup that backed up the whole system. And, of course, while trying to restore to a new system I just got - I found the backup to be corrupted and to-date have not been able to recover.

I have all the software, so no issue there, and all the job-related data is good, but my real loss is CAD Drafting/Design Library and Schematic Symbols which only resided on the computer and the Tape Backup.

So, looking for a reputable source to do a comprehensive replacement - I know there will be a cost... that isn't the issue... but I'm looking for quality...

Any recommendations?

Comprehensive as the root of my side work is Machine Design and Facility/Process Layout, so...

  • Structural Shapes
  • Mobile Equipment
  • Fasteners
  • Fluid Power Symbols
  • Electric Symbols
  • HVAC
  • Plumbing/Piping
  • Welding
  • Drafting/GD&T
  • Architectural Symbols (Lighting to Building/Foundation Cross Sections to Landscaping)

Man, just typing this list is depressing me... I built this Library up over 20+ years

Are you sure the backup file is corrupted?

I had the same issue because AutoCAD 2013 and newer will not recognize older version AutoCAD DATA and require a conversion patch from AutoCAD.

It is a free download from their Website.

Yeah - Backup Hardware is operational, Software Drivers current with new OS and recognizes Tape... but keep getting read errors, and data corruption messages. I contacted the OEM and just FedEx'd them the Tape to see if they can recover.

What was the catastrophic failure? Hard drive? If not and the drive is good then get it off of it.

Tape drive drivers for the new OS?

My wife fosters rescues (dogs/cats taken from bad environments) until a new home can be found and a Labradoodle we just got with apparent separation anxiety tore up my Office while were gone for the day. Computer ended up on the floor in pretty bad shape. I pulled the HD and put in a different machine but I can't get it to spin up and even do a sector scan.

Currently researching a place that can do data recovery. But at this point, my only real loss is my CAD Library, everything else is on-hand.

Did you check the bios to see if it recognized the drive? You can find cheap adapters to usb and plug it in to a running computer. Or Acronis

GrabCAD & TraceParts are good places to start and have a number of different file formats.

If your job related data is good then I'm guessing that the CAD file opens no problem even without your library of symbols.

Can you not recover the symbols from the archived job files?

Sure, I can deconstruct old schematics and drawings to rebuild the library, at least partially, but it comes down to effort vs. value vs. cost - which, in my situation, if I can find a good comprehensive library that is drawn consistently and correctly, it's worth the investment.

For schematic nothing seems to beat Eagle.

They have a low cost or free hobby version and a world-class library.

Its not related to your problem really or your questions either, but what type of drive and size of tape (capacity) are you using, 1/2" or smaller? What type and manufacturer? It really interests me....

Also, do you remember what the data rates were when saving/reading a tape on your PC? That is vital....

I may be able to make sure that this never happens again for you....and the Tapes are totally reliable....

Thanks for your answers.

Tape is a SDLT1 160/320GB, drive is an old Seagate (not at home presently and don't think much of the labeling is readable anymore) software is Backup Exec.

Moving forward, I'm transitioning away from Tape. With the new system, I bought an external HD and will mirror image to it, and also started a subscription to Carbonite; thanks for the offer though.

Anyone have any first-hand knowledge with this particular offering?
