Glass microsphere

07/21/2007 12:58 AM

Does anyone have an idea of where I can get Hollow Glass microspheres. Having a crush strength of more than 10000psi.

I have tried the 3M glass bubbles, would like to know other alternatives.

Glass bubbles are used as fillers in polymer composites. There are many kinds. Try calling, "Composites One", a major supplier to the composites industry.

Thanks Bob

Actually the reason we are looking at Glass bubbles is due to High crush strength required. There are a few of them having less PSI ( < 10000 PSI)

anyways thanks again for the direction

Potters Ballotini is fabricating these too.

In the USA try Potters Industries. Spheres like that are sometimes used in explosives...

Depending on the volume needed you can sort them by doing a proof test to a higher pressure. As the pressure mounts the low crush ones will break and drop to the bottom of the fluid. You may also relate their specific gravity to wall thickness. Possibly a symmetry test would be useful as well. You might then be able to sort them non destructively with a set of low specific gravisty fluids or dense gasses.

Since off center ones will be weak, you also need to sort out the concentric ones. I am not sure how they make them. Someone told me once they use centers of one glass that make a gas and a shell of a another gas??

Saint-Gobain Companies. There are several business units with hollow micro-spheres. It will depend on your end use and specification.

Saint-Gobain Proppants (www.proppants.saint-gobain.com) has ceramic spheres with crush strangth to 15,000.
