if it is fuel injected, there is air in the fuel lines which will have to be vented.

Could be a lot of things -you've given very little info.

Could be a flat battery. Or bad gas (fuel).

Does it turn over?

If your knowledge is such that you do not have a clue as to what to do, I would contact a local mechanic and let him fix it. You could do more damage than good in such situations.

Trying to lean all the possibilities from CR4 members is a long hard way to go, but you might get lucky, the infos already placed here are good, but not complete, but neither is the info that you have given us.

Remember the old computer saying "GIGO".......garbage in, garbage out.....full and correct infos from you will help CR4 members to define your problem(s) much better.

I would take the plugs out and turn the engine over on the starter until you can small petrol (gas) .

Put 'em back in and start up. (try not to mix up the plug leads!)

try this --------dripple some gas down the intake (you know-the middle of the air cleaner) if it trys to start ---you might wont to check the fuel pump. some people wont to run around with a small amount of gas in the tank, not a good idea, the gas around the fuel pump ,in the tank is also the coolent fot the pump

Re: truck problems

Rule no. 1 never run out of gas.

Most engines you can flush the air trapped in your intake and exhaust by removing your air breather and turning over the motor till the bad air is removed.

Some computers you have to clear the codes by disconnecting the battery for 3 or 4 minutes

When you run out of gas the computer stores the fuel to air ratio and other information in memory.

A car should easilly be able to cope with running out of gas, the fuel system should self prime...the only problems should be.

1. Avoiding flattening the battery before fresh fuel is pulled through, or

2. Crud or water in the bottom of the tank..

That's why I suggested removing the plugs and turning it over until the gas comes through.

When a car is first made it has an empty tank....do you think the will design it so that it s difficult and time consuming to start?

If the software can't cope with this situation the the guy who wrote it should be stripped maked and slapped with a wet Haddock.

Is getting slapped with a wet haddock akin to a codwallop?

My personal take is that we do not really have enough info to make truly intelligent ideas, he should first hit us with full infos....

As he has not replied recently, he has probably got it running and left (us!).....any bets?

You will need to change the fuel filter, it may not be the only problem but, having run the tank dry the filter will be full of debris & will restrict the fuel flow.

Re: truck pruobles

A 1994 Chevy would have either multi port or throttle body fuel injection. The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank, and is cooled by the fuel around it. If you have been running your fuel level consistently under 1/4 tank, you have most probably burned out the pump.

To check, look in the engine compartment for your fuel delivery lines. Trace the lines out, somewhere on them you will find a small cap, usually black. Remove this cap and under it you should find a small bicycle type (schraeder) valve. Turn your ignition on for 30 seconds, but do not attempt to start. Now go back to that valve, and CAREFULLY depress the valve stem. WARNING!!!!!!!! If there is fuel present it will spray out forcefully!!!! If your fuel pump is working. If you get no fuel, replace your fuel pump & fuel pump relay. This will most likely be an expensive thing for you. Fuel pumps for that vintage of vehicle around here range in price from $110-$350 with relay, plus the cost of installation. I would NOT recommend that you try this yourself.

As mentioned by an earlier poster, you will need to replace your fuel filter (requires special tools).

...you imply (correctly I feel) that an untrained person could end up with a "burning experience!".....

(Its sad that you must cart around 2 gallons of fuel or so, just to keep the pump cool, how can anyone design and sell such a system? Its criminal!!)

I also feel that the person concerned is untrained......nuff said?

Maybe a bad design, but I've kept mine maintained and regular change of fuel filters. Knock on wood, I'm still with the original pump. I know a number of people who've had to have it changed. Considerable drop of coin to do so. You should be able to hear the pump run when you switch on the ignition. A low whine which stops when it comes up to pressure.

Re: truck pruobles

The point that I was trying to make was that you basically always need to carry the weight of say 2 gallons of gas, that you cannot use......awful!!

You have effectively reduced the size of the tank by this amount AND increased the weight of the vehicle.......DUUUUHHHHHHH!!!!

Would it not have been better to have a pump that produced less heat AND a well in the tank for it, so that only a pint of so of petrol would have been enough to keep it cooled (a cooler motor anyway) down? How about a temperature monitor to turn it off when it gets hot AND tells the driver what is wrong!!!!

Or even better a (air)cool(ed) pump running outside of the tank.....then if it REALLY got too hot, there is less of a chance of turning the whole vehicle into an Olympic torch?
