You need to be more observant of your situation.

If the two gauges are on other sides of an orifice then the difference in the two pressures can tell the flow rate through the orifice. If there is nothing between the two gauges then notice if the gauges are identical. One maybe for displaying higher pressures that the other can endure but not display. If they are identical gauges but one shows more aging then the second gauge then the new gauge may have been "hot tapped" into the chamber to repair the monitoring failure without stopping production.

There are many more plausible scenarios to explain this. You did not give us enough information to suggest a reason.

How do you put pressure gauges in series?

Silly! You just use one of these on the first gauge in line.

Umm what?

Still a parallel pressure sensing circuit in my text books.

You're not using common core reference books are you?

Darn it, why I haven't thought about that long before?

Can't see why this is OT....

That's a series pressure gauge.

I like the retro panel surface mount look. Nice.

Indeed. All pressure gauges are differential, though some measure the difference between an inlet and atmosphere while others, as in the picture, measure the difference between an inlet and an outlet. If you take two of the latter, and place each across an orifice, the two orifices being in series, then i think you have a series connection of the pressure gauges also.

It is actually a WIKA duplex differential gauge with two separate bourdon tube sensors that are not connected to each other except by the mechanical linkage that drives the pointer.

Flow-through (series) gauges are usually diaphragm type.

Yes, a close look would have shown that the right side is positive and the left side is negative pressure.

WOW! That gauge is serious. Or series, whatever.

Dear sreeharshab

Are you talking about Electrical Pressure ? If it is, then your gauge will get damaged !

If you are talking about Fluid of gas pressure, then your flow will get blocked.

If you are talking about some other type of pressure then better to discharge it.

Silly!

When they are connected in parallel, the pressure is measured paralleled and when they are in series, it is measured seried.

Now, I have to go and check what that means

Pressure gauges are "often connected in parallel" because the knowledgeable users are expecting to get sensible, accurate and useful measurements!

IF you can find a way to series them.... "What happens in case of series" .... Nothing will happen, nothing sensible nor useful information can be obtained!

By design, pressure gauges are like electrical voltmeters, they are always connected across the source, not inline to get a useful readings!

Doesn't having two gauges in series mean that you are never really be sure what the pressure is?

You make it sound like not knowing the pressure is a problem. It might be a desired feature.

Re: Pressure Gauges Question

Once designed a small chemical process. When finished we were way under budget Things like that are bad since they slim down the next project taking into consideration the past project financial costs and variances. Very quickly we replaced 4" gauges with 10 and 12 inch ones. Installed some in parallel and "jimmied" the smaller ones so we knew which was correct reading. Bought a lot of shop tools (Snap-On not Sears), PPE, epoxied the floors and many other things. All done by "Engineering Creative Accounting".

Good Luck, Old Salt

Pressure is measured between 2 points, if it is in series it will read ZERO. A flow meter is usually connected in series .

Think about how Differential pressure gauge/transmitter installed to filter/ strainner. If two points having the same pressure, means filter/ strainner is clean, you will get zero reading.

I really dunno how to connect it in-series, is that like you put two rotameters in the same pipeline? Then you should get the same readings. BUT what is the point? to counter check or to make you confuse?

Re: Pressure Gauges Question

Pressure gauge are always connect in parallel as the inlet port of the pressure switch consist a tinny copper tube that deflected during the pressure is flow in the pressure gauge. Therefore it is not possible to have pressure gauge connect in series.
