Germany giving up it's nuclear power by 2020?

10/26/2005 10:28 AM

I guess this is old news, but Germany wants to phase out all of their nuclear power plants by 2020. That seems pretty ambitious for a nation that is still one of the world's leading industrial powers.
Although they say they are investing heavily in renewable energies, can a nation like Germany ever really give up all of it's nuclear power?
What do you think?

Good Question

The question you pose has a political component, the importance of which can't be under-estimated. Here in the U.S., "energy policy" is a creature of Congress and lobbyists from the oil, natural gas, and automotive industries. Environmentalists have a say, too, but it's not in a commanding voice. To succeed, Germany's non-nuclear plans will reqire a major buy-in from the nation's industrial players. Support from the Green Party will never be enough.
