To Displace Helical Gear Wheel

09/29/2015 5:28 AM

I am currently looking for the method to displace helical gear wheel back from its actual fitting position. Few days ago shrink fitted wheel displaced 10mm during normal operation. The diameter and width of the wheel is 1.72 x 0.360 Mtr. respectively. Weight of wheel is 4.25 Tons.

Expert help would be appreciated.

Expert help may be obtained immediately by talking the problem trough with the equipment manufacturer over the telephone.

Either a very large press or a lot of heat and a big hammer.

How did you fit it the other day?

My Friend,

Good Day.

Thanks for your reply. Actually gear wheel we received in fitting form on the shaft twelve years ago.Displacement ocuure due to the over speed of machine. Its normal rpm are 1500.

Regards

Moving the gear wheel on the shaft will require enough heat to be applied in the correct manner so as to avoid loss of metal hardness yet expand the gear enough to press it back into the correct position.

The procedure requires a hydraulic press either portable or stationary with enough pressure to accomplish the needed movement. (Portable press for in place procedure or stationary if the assembly is taken apart.)

The amount of pressure required to move the gear is directly dependent on the interference fit between the gear wheel and the shaft and the amount of heat applied to the wheel.

Based on your limited information I would guess the hydraulic pressure requirement to be 30-50 tons.

This is a hazardous, critical procedure that poses extreme risk to the equipment and any personnel in the immediate area.

If you have not ever performed the procedure and do not have anyone at the site that has experience in performing this procedure, it is in your best interest to contract with a knowledgeable, competent field service organization.

I suggest you evaluate the root-cause for the wheel being displaced.

Either the interference fit is not great enough to hold the gear wheel in place during normal operation or the machine is being operated outside design limits which will result in catastrophic failure very soon.

Considering the size and mass of the gear wheel the results of a catastrophic failure most likely will be fatal in nature.

Sounds like it and/or its mounting method isn't suitable for the application. Find the root cause first before attempting to put it back.

We replaced some overhead crane gears by removing the drum from the crane then suspending it lengthwise in vertical position over the gear that was placed on two suitable saw horse type supports. The gear was heated with rosebud to suitable temp using at that time heat markers but now days infrared heat gun will suffice. The shaft was cooled with liquid nitrogen and when lowered in place worked as predicted.

Removal of old gear was accomplished with hydraulic jacks and heat. I do not remember if we cooled the shaft at that time but it would make the job easier.

Looks common isn't it. You could reverse engineer one of these (MT) and you will found the answer you are looking for.
