Most things have a calorific value.

You just have to burn it or recycle it.

Kiln of cement factories nowadays is permitted to burn plastics and other combustibles.

Cement kiln could range 800oC to thousand (if i am not mistaken). This is a requirement of burning this kind of stuff to avoid formation of dioxin and furan - a carcinogen.

There is a movement underway to increase the value of plastic, that is of low value, to make gathering and recycling it a more profitable endeavour...

"The report lays out plans to effectively increase the value of the 80 percent of plastic waste considered low-quality, and thereby increase the likelihood of it being collected. This is where Merkl views elements of the circular economy come into play. For example, there is a call to encourage technologies that convert plastic into fuel through gasification and pyrolysis, or into electricity through incineration with energy recovery."

" The solutions largely focus on mitigation, treatment and collection."

...."only 3 percent of marine plastic pollution is circulating in those gyres that have come to symbolize the problem."...

Let's genetically alter sea creatures to digest the plastic.

SE, that second pic is NOT of one of the Gyres, a tiny boat like that would never survive that far out n the ocean. That's an unrelated picture of a heavily polluted river or lake.

Yes, that river/lake is part of the problem, but placing it with the infographic of the Gyres insinuates that that's what the Gyres look like, when to the naked eye they look like open ocean.

The plastics in the Gyres have been mechanically broken down by tidal action, and some have 'photodegraded(1)' as long UV exposure starts to break the polymer chains, but the 'sea of trash' and 'island of garbage bags' images exaggerate the problem and make it look like sensationalist fear-mongering.

Do the Gyres exist? Yes, they're a natural feature of the ocean currents. Do they collect plastic debris? Yes, they collect ALL floating ocean debris. Is it a buildup of plastic in the Gyres a problem? Yes, any time litter accumulates in one area it becomes a problem. Do we need to raise public awareness? Yes, too many people are unaware that the Gyres even exist, much less that they're collecting the 'ocean trash.' Do we need to create blind, unthinking panic about the 'Great Garbage Patches' in the ocean? No, panic is seldom useful in anything, and unthinking reactions typically lead to 'knee-jerk' responses that do more harm than good, then cooler, leveler heads could work out better and longer-term solutions.

Notes:

  1. Yes, this happens, it's not a very fast process, but, it can help speed up the effects of mechanical degradation.

"There is a movement underway to increase the value of plastic,"

But that is the whole reason for plastic's ubiquity; it's of very low value (manufacturing and materials costs) compared to other materials with the same versatility of forms.

*Mind blown, with whatever humorous or cartoonish visuals you prefer*

Compression molding / composite articles formation. One can make sheets, plates, bars, containers, storage walls, conduction pipes of good strength, corrosion resistance for long term workability. It can use mix polymers too.

There was a company that had started the process of reducing plastic, tires, harbor sludge into petroleum by using microwaves, cannot remember the name but I held some of their shares for a few years. I think they moved from New England states to Michigan. Apparently their process could be used in removing oil from tar sands and tar sand by products. According to their propaganda by heating oil with microwaves it partially refines it at the same time making it easier to transport by pipeline or other methods.
