Yes, review this:

Then perform a search for your desired subjects. (You should already know where to look)

Some idea of your location on the planet might be helpful, if anyone wanted to help you.

Most codes are well known.

Good luck.

Review your lecture notes. You do have lecture notes, don't you?

If in doubt review your other carrier options!

You must be pretty excited posing this question here!

If you belong to class of '83, and have not passed Part-I of the PE test then you should go back and review at least all of your Math courses plus the fundamentals of EE....

Part-II of the PE test are all application related...but you are not limited to just EE applications! By now whatever you have done and experienced related to the the field should be your guiding light! Good luck!

LOL. I sure does knew. That's the least requirement becoming an electrical engineer I should say. If you can't imagine, it's hard to figure out what you are doing later on.

I took the PE exam in 1993 after having attended a review course offered through the University of Washington.

If you do a search on the internet for your area, you may find something comparable.

In the absence of that, purchase a PE Review book through Amazon along with one of their sample exams.

Have fun!

When you took your EIT exam, you should have had some inkling of what engineering area you were going to select for your PE exam. That being the case, you should have at least been thinking about it.

"Electrical power" seems too specialized for a PE engineering topic. When I did my PE, the choices were:

  • Civil
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Chemical
  • Environmental

When I took the exam, I studied my textbooks. That, and I still had my book for preparing for the EIT exam, and I worked problems on that - mainly to increase solving speed.

Since it is an open book test, I prepared topic sheets, with equations and diagrams, e.g. Distillation, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Heat Transfer, etc. This worked really well for me, and I recommend that you try it too.

Do you still have your textbooks?

Mikerho,

Over the last 10-15 years PE exams have become significantly more specialized. There are now 24 separate exam areas, including 5 in civil and 3 each in electrical & mechanical. Details of the power exam in electrical & computer engineering can be found here.

Regards,

Tony

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I passed that exam over 40 years ago when each state had their own version, and we were allowed to bring books into the exam room.

As others have said, get some of the exam prep books appropriate for your state and if you have time, take a prep class, you really need to know how to take a modern CBT (Computer Based Test). Test taking is a lot different than the old pencil and paper tests with slide rule, log tables, and graphs.

Be prepared, in a multiple choice test like this there's always two answers that will look correct if you make a common sign or unit error, plus one that shows whether you used sine instead of cosine, etc. There will also be a rote section about the laws and codes that has to come from memory.

Best of luck to you.

Dear Wwwheaty,

1. Do not get panicky.

2. Three days prior to exam day, have revision study - if possible have combined study with your friend who is compatible to you and support each other.

3. Keep your mind free on the previous day evening and have a good sleep.

4. In the exam hall - pl. feel free that you are in your class room with full silence and start answering.

5. Answer the questions first, which you know the answer thoroughly. The answer for the question - which you are not sure try to answer at the last.

6. Try to have a revision f your answer and any error observed, pl.correct it.

Re: Electrical Engineer's Power PE Exam

I agree. This is where I went for help when I prepared for the PE exam a few years ago. The Camara books are very useful and there is a package deal you can buy which includes, not only the review text, but, sample exam questions. The sample questions turned out to be quite representative of what I found on the actual exam (I took the Power exam as well). The Reference Manual is extremely comprehensive, but is useful only if you already have a basic understanding of the concepts therein; it really is just a reference and will not teach you something you don't already know.

To prepare for the exam, I spent a couple weeks working sample problems and familiarizing myself with the current version of NFPA 70 (NEC) and the Camara Reference Manual (chapters related to POWER, of course). Those were the two books I took into the exam with me. I observed several people, each bringing dozens of books into the exam, flipping endlessly through page after page of book after book searching for that which they did not know. Before I took the exam, my Principal Engineer, at the time, gave me a great piece of advice: "Don't take a shit-load of books with you. Either you know it or you don't". My advice to you is to only take the material you need which describes intricate/obscure details of concepts which you already know. If you don't have a handle on the fundamentals, get one and you will be just fine (another piece of advice I was given).

Re: Electrical Engineer's Power PE Exam

I graduated in 1974 and passed the Chemical PE exam in 1983. It didn't seem to matter to my employer at the time, so I let it lapse in 1990. Big mistake. Heck, it was probably only about $20 per year to keep it active.

Now I am working for an engineering company. My boss suggested that it would be good to get reinstated, so I called the State Board for Ohio to see what it would take... Well, since it has been so long, I had to re-apply and re-take the exam. What a royal pain in the keester! At least it has been a good opportunity to clean some of the cobwebs from the deep recesses in my 63-year-old brain!

Like you, I will almost certainly be the oldest one in the exam room on October 30th. Good luck!

In 1980, my PE reg. fee was only $40 for four years (what a bargain!)

Now, it's more than $320 for two years (ouch!)

And they're talking about going annual soon...

Don't just study hard, but also, study smart.

That is, don't just look at it as big test (which it is, of course), but also look at your preparation-effort as a project to be ''managed''.

In effect, you can (project-manage) your way to passing it.

In any case, good luck and good study-project-managing.
