Calculation of WFT from DFT

Regarding the painting of Valves, we need to calculate the Work Volume required.

It will be very useful, if anyone tell me the calculation of Wet film thickness from the Dry film thickness in detail.

Wet film thickness can be estimated by adding the % solvents/volatile materials content to the % solids content of the dry film thickness. Solids content is usually given on the data sheet.

This is only an estimation, as wet film thickness is measured on a horizontal sample panel.

Sag on vertical/irregular surfaces will skew the results.

Dry film thickness measuring devices are readily available.

Assuming that the dry film thickness is specified, then the calculation will depend on the percentages each of the solids in suspension and reducer (if any) added.

The usual formula would be :- wet = dry/(%solids/100)

or if reducer is used :- wet = (dry/(%solids/100))/(1 +(%reducer/100))

Then either:-

1. If working in metrics. Divide 1 by the above answer to get coverage in m²/ltr,

ie. if the equation result is 0.25mm, then the coverage will be 1/0.25 = 4m²/ltr

2. If you're in the US then you would divide 1605 by the above formula answer in mils to get square feet per US gallon. (1 mil =1 thou or 0.001" = 0.0254mm)

ie. if the equation result is 10 mils, then divide 1605 by 10 to get 160.5 ft²/gal which, incidentally, is pretty close to 4m²/ltr

Edit, I note that Ideasmith found some info on line for you whilst I was typing this, but mine may help a bit if you need metrics.

Maybe if you told us what material you are using.

  • What type of coating?
  • Epoxy coating?
  • Paint coating?
  • Oil based?
  • Water based?
  • Valve description?
  • Valve size?
  • How many coats?
  • Primer used?
  • Pre-primed?
