Diesel Engine Vibration

11/19/2015 4:37 AM

Hi everybody we have just concluded rewinding a 250KW alternator. At the initial start of the plant normal voltage was established, synchronizing was possible but on load we noticed a rise in temperature within the end bearing cover. Further diagnosis reveals worn end bearing cover which was precision. That corrected the temperature: Now we noticed vibration around the plant. The prime mover and alternator is direct coupling with one end bearing, all alternator shims were placed as found. We will like to know how to eliminate the vibration which we presumed is from prime mover abnormal function. Please assist.

Direct coupled machines need great precision in alignment. This means it needs to be mounted by a person who know how to align them and shim to perfect balance. You can not remove and replace the shims where they were because slight variances in the mount will mean new shimming is needed.

That said, both the alternator and the drive shaft need to be vibration free alone.

Suggest you hire someone who know how to do balancing and shimming. Read this and refer to the power generation section.

A millwright is the usual person for this.

Were the rotor windings replaced or rewound?

If so; the rotor must be balanced before being re-attached to the prime mover.

Once the rotor is in balance it can be aligned with and coupled to the prime mover.

did you use one of these and a magnetic base??

You will never solve this problem using an anonymous forum and no on-site expert technicians.

First major mistake was, "all alternator shims were placed as found".

That will never do.

The longer you wait to get help, the more ex$pen$ive the cure will be.

Do as aurizon says.

Dear Mr.AlfredCoker,

1. Have measured the vibration Level with proper Instrument. What are the vibration level in terms of AMPLITUDE, VELOCITY, ACCELERATION and FREQUENCY in Vertical, Horizontal and Axial plane.

2. What is the type of coupling used, since each type of coupling has its own allignment accuracy.

But from your posting - I presume the vibration problem is appearing. If the vibration levels before rewinding and after re-winding is same, then the root cause of vibration will be or is due to electrical/magnetic aspect.

I also presume that the stator winding alone is re-wound and not the rotor. If rotor is re-wound, is it dynamically balanced for the required grade, before assembling the set. If not this is to be done.

Pl. check for the coupling bolts with washers equally fitted, if one washer is left out - it will create un-balance and vibration.

On seeing your details, we can decide on the issue.

You already have some pretty valid replies here, but I have played this game before. Is your prime mover/ alternator mounted on a metal frame ?I have come across two such problems in my time, where the generator base has required grinding to bring it back to 'true' before alignment can be done successfully.

In such cases, the vibration was probably present long before any windings were replaced.

Too many 'qualified' persons walk around 'inspecting' their plant, with their heads jammed up their anuses, while trying to project a persona of knowledge and competence.
