Kitchen Exhaust

12/11/2015 1:00 AM

In a NATO forces kitchen in Afghanistan, there was a problem of smoke from the wood fired ovens of cooking all over kitchen and dinning ha. The entire kitchen and dinning hall of over 300 people sitting area walls and ceiling became dead black due to smoke during the initial period of 30 minits of firing the ovens. There were over 12 wood fired ovens each of appx one meter dia. The exhaust and ventilation system was designed by a leading HVAC and ventilation firm and the US Core of Engineers. When the matter could not be solved, a Mechanical Engineer in the weekly meeting asked for a sanction of US $2,000 for the necessary changes to make and solve the problem and was granted. Using the pressure difference formula between supply air and exhaust to the chimney, he increased the dia of the drive pulley by 0.5" and found the 2 Groove A sec belt get elasticated after some time running. He changed both drive pulley of the blower and drive motor to 2 grove B section but the motor was over loaded. Since he has no fund to buy a 10 HP motor to replace the existing 7.5 HP, he searched through the old scraped store and found a 7,5 HP motor similar to the existing one and fixed it in same line on the right side of the driving end with the existing one on the left side, He replaced the drive wheel and pulley to 4 Groove B section and synchronised both motor to run one on left side 2 groove and another on right side 2 groove of the drive end of the blower, Ofcourse the diameter of the new are 0.5" bigger than the original. The problem of smoke solved and the engineer was awarded a gold Medal by the Core of Engineers of US Army, the 1st one to a civilian in the world, Team of people from all over other NATO bases and states lined up with the engineer to find out how he solved the problem. How is this PC?

Firing only 6 wood fires at a time would have solved the problem of the smoke too.

Whats your point? Is the C in PC a contest?

Did I miss something? Neither article said a word about what the awardee(s) did that involved any engineering. Total fluff.

..." the de Fleury is a rare honor that requires recognition and endorsement from a commander indicating a level of confidence and appreciation for the work the individual has done toward support of the regiment. I know it's not handed out freely, but only awarded to those who have significant, sustained accomplishments toward making life better for the American Soldier."

These aren't given for one accomplishment, one act, but a history of contribution of high value over a number of years....only one gold medal is awarded each year....

"The de Fleury Medal is presented to individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to the Engineer Regiment in a variety of positions and locations. It recognizes the very best of Army engineering," said Col. Pete Helmlinger, USACE-TAA commander, who presented the award to both men."

So they had no money for the right equipment, but they could scrap together a team of people from all over to question how it was done as well a gold medal.

sounds like and efficiency issue.

"Parting Gift for Afghans: A Military McMansion

Three Years Late, an $89 Million Base for Afghan Troops May Be Too Complicated for Them to Operate; 'Deep Fryers? Really?'"

..."Afghan military cooks traditionally do their food preparation on the floor, and prefer to make large pots of rice and meat stew. When Afghan commanders inspected construction recently, they complained that the U.S.-supplied propane stoves are too small to hold such large pots. Now the contractor is installing a kitchen annex with 10 wood-burning stoves set into the ground that Afghan cooks can stand on as they stir."
