Heated Bird Roost

01/22/2016 10:48 PM

Watching house building shows, I see a roof vent running the length of the roof. I wonder if a simple little roof (with walls) over that, with openings on the sides for the birds to get into would work? Baffles would keep the different birds apart, and prevent side drafts from scavenging out the heat too quickly.

It probably would have to be cleaned out yearly, along with the gutters. Old nesting materials harbor mites and such.

The house is throwing that heat away, why not use it to keep the birdies warm?

Why would would you do this?

Birds adapt to their climate, summer and winter.

If it's too cold, they move south or die.

I expect it might be an artifical home to enough birds to cause you far more mess and grief than pleasure. (Think pigeon poo under a streetlight)

Bats are more fun, but either way, don't forget that the economy of Nauru was built on guano. You can probably get a nice little shovel selection at the nearest Home Depot or Lowe's. Bon appetit!

Any access to the attic space is likely to be used by all sorts of wildlife, including bats, squirrels, mice, rats, all of which cause problems....Your attic should be sealed, and any vents should be well screened to block access by unwanted guests....

Have you ever smelled a hen house full of wet chickens?

Those vents allow the attic to breath, exhales as it gets hot and inhales as it it cools off. And as the attic cools off, the incoming air will bring with it the aroma of all living things that reside in your vents.

But I'm sure the birdies would love a nice sauna during the winter months

If you want to keep the little feathered flea bags warm, try one of these:

birdhouse heater - Small heaters

Thanks, all, for the good info. I didn't realize that roof vents breathed in also. Another great idea shot to hell. I did find nice bird roosts in Google, and a simple way to heat them with supplies from Home Depot. I was concerned about birds pooping all over the roof.

I may work on a dual purpose bird roost/nesting house.

Here's a nice house that's going through a foreclosure sale. It even has a fire place for those cold nights

um, birds are cold blooded animals and have been around a long long long time. They know how to stay warm enough.

Not exactly. The average bird runs at a higher temperature than the average mammal.

Love your heated bird roost. After all, what do we put on in the cold - a down jacket. They already have one.

Just moved to a house in Tennessee. Replacing trim I have found lots of nesting material in the area between the roof and the inside ceiling of my shed and back porch. It all came out clean, no noticeable bird poop. I don't know if it's birds or squirrels. No eggshells, either. Either of these areas don't connect to the attic. The critters got in when the soffits rotted out, poor construction.

I'm going to leave the openings on the shed open, not replacing the soffit just yet. It will be interesting to see who moves in. A difficult approach/landing for a bird, easy for a squirrel. I prefer birds, the squirrels just might chew on the wiring to the overhead lights!

I may try to put up motion-detecting video cameras, to see what happens. I think I can connect one to an old laptop and use the hard drive for recording. Maybe at the same time I can see what those birds that are hammering on my main roof want! I sealed up their old haunts on the main house, they are not happy.
