Nickel Cadmium Battery Getting Hot

02/03/2016 5:30 AM

Gents,

My three GTGs nickel cadmium batteries are installed in common air conditioned room with separate battery chargers. But one of the battery group getting hot even the battery charger setting is same as the others. Anybody can give the causes for this issue? However we are going to check the electrolyte level and link tightness. Additionally need any more inspections?

". The effect can be reversed with a pulse charge, but more effectively by applying a full discharge cycle."

Sounds like the battery is being overcharged...

I'd swap the battery getting hot with one of the others. If the same battery gets hot, it's a battery problem. If it's the other, it's a problem with the charger.

Very typical for ni-cads that are weak and on the verge of thermal run away. If this is a multi celled battery, it's time for an overhaul. Check with the battery manufacturer as most has very specific instructions on maintenance and overhaul. They will also note min/ max voltages per cell.

At this point, you should not try to charge that particular battery until you either consult the with the manufacture or RTFM that came with the battery. Otherwise, magic smoke will appear and it will be disastrous for you and the place your charging them in.

I have no idea what GTGs refers to, but I do know about Nickel Cadmium batteries. I abandoned them years ago! Actually, I do still have one portable drill that still runs (for a short time right after recharging) on NiCd, but everything else is now using NiMH or LiIon.

Do some research on replacing those NiCds!

Firstly, you have given us very little info to work with (though you may have improved that with a later post, I have not looked yet!)

Is one of the cells shorted out?

Does the battery get hot on any of the other chargers.

Do they stay on the chargers all the time? What is the charging current and the battery size, anything higher than C/10 I would consider in the long term to be overcharging, shortening battery life...

The weakest cell in any battery dies first.....obvious but forgotten. Every cell is unique....many forget this too.....

Maybe you either need to find a better charger, that only charges when needed, or accept that new batteries will be needed more frequently than you may think....and accept the costs involved.
