Yeah.... No. Not buying it.

If it were real, how is it being controlled? How does it know to lift up and set back down?

I'm guessing there was a crane nearby lifting it up. The movement was in a small area and it swung around like a pendulum -- like it was on wires. I didn't see any dust being blown away. I saw one stick that moved, which might have been due a random gust of wind, or a separate piece of string tied to it and yanked by a guy out of the camera shot.

Yes, I am not a FAN of the underlying concept.

Everything old is new again.

I had a solid plastic one of these in a set of toy soldiers when I was a kid. I was told one that the Army never went any further with the development as they decided it was unsafe.

its a good post but not really the same. I think yours was low tech and almost all trust.

I read their page and their little sled has some cool electronics. its max height is just a foot. so it's creating a small cushion like a hovercraft except it has no skirts.

I don't think its a trick

I agree with you, I would expect more dust blowing around. It doesn't look like there is a lot of rotor disk area which means higher downdraft velocity for the amount of thrust.

The drone ridden by Catalin Alexandru Duru at Lake Ouareau in Quebec apparently had a lot more rotor disk area and was kicking up quite a bit of debris.

There could be a bit of graphical computer magic happening here.

It's an aircraft taxiway. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of dust on it but I did see some at 35 and again at 43.

Also, this toy seems more like an air bearing using ground effect lifting instead of fan thrust alone.

Still, this looks like a toy for the affluenza kid than anything practical.

I wonder how long one runs. They claim that a special docking station allows for a recharge in 35 minutes instead of the usual 6 hours but I could not find a nominal operating time at their website.

The site claims 3 min... 6 min on the extended time model.

I'm sure the extended time unit also requires extended time to charge.

Well 3 minutes is six times more time than the H202-Z Jetpack but less time than the T 73. If you want to live dangerously, go for the gusto!

Given the flawed concept and poor speed and maneuverability of the thing why not just remove the batteries entirely and run a power lead to the thing instead. It's hardly for useful transport (and NEVER will be because of the physics employed in its core design), more an amusement park ride people can get a kick out of.

Wow, the guy riding it looks sooooo relaxed if this is real. I didn't even bother listening with the sound on.

Looks quite fake to me just looking at the video, almost like he is making a massive effort to hold a single position so a crane cable can be more easily digitally removed (the collar shape and editing is really suspect too).

Media services online are saying they believe it isn't a hoax but don't appear to actually have seen any real proof except video clips and proposed spec sheets.

Regardless this is NOT the way forward, this is the sort of multiple fan contraption thing has been done before and is what I would expect from something in the 70's or 80's. It's like they are trying to cash in on the hover board hype concept with whatever tech they had lying around.

Regardless of it's poor functionality and high cost it's not even cool to watch or be seen on by any standards, so why buy it?

"If it's real I am curious how they are getting 272 peak HP out of 36 ~5" dia fans. That's roughly 7.5 HP each which at 38 volts works out to pushing at least 150 amps through each of the tiny motors.

I know some of the high end RC outrunner type brushless DC motors can put out a huge amount of power for their size but have yet to see any that can put out ~7.5 HP and fit into a 5" in diameter ducted fan assy with room to spare.

Also what does this have to do with Orthopedic surgeons? Do they have an above average tendency to buy into new flying gadgets?

The orthopedic surgeons will love the business this gizmo will create. Lots of broken bones to fix.

I think I'd pay say $10 dollars for a go (well probably for my son to have a go).

Let's say ten 4 or 5 minute goes per hour; 10 hours a day; pays back the $15,000 dollars in 15 days. that goes up to about 22 days if you allow $30/hr for staff (two people on duty).

But then you'd need about 10 sets of batteries per flying carpet, and, you'd need to be able to change them very quickly.

The pay back time then depends on the cost of the batteries compared to the whole unit.

Don't know how much you need to pay for a "pitch".

(Why did I bother to work this out? I guess it's because deep down inside I really would like to have a go.)

Is this real?

Like this is somewhat into

the geometry does not seem appealing though. It needs a serious cool design.

Orthopedic? Try Neurosurgeon. I see no helmet.

As an experience bike rider (experienced = fallen more than 50 times) I know if you know when it is coming, you can roll and protect your head. Let that thing be moving quickly and strike an immovable object, and the fall becomes unpredictable and, from experience, I know in that type of fall, your head hits first. Trek has a shattered helmet of mine they requested for analysis, after a crash where I struck an unseen immovable object. I had 2 broken ribs and a class 3 shoulder separation, but no concussion. Helmets shatter and absorb the blow. Note - this was not a high speed road wreck, but a low speed decent in the woods on a 5% grade. Maybe going 15 mph which they will get that contraption to do, I'm sure.

TELL THAT IDIOT TO PUT ON AT LEAST A BIKE HELMET!
