Freedom of the press, yes, but accountability as well.....with freedom comes responsibility... it certainly seems like a necessary organisation, reporting can be very dangerous and without some support, people can go missing very easily...Freedom is something that has to be wrested from governing bodies, the weak against the strong, the more allies you have the stronger you become, and the more progressive the society....

This is probably a nit... but it would be improved if there some explanation about what the colors mean, what information they are trying to convey.

If you meant the map, the lighter the colours, the better the press.....so to say.

The USA is in 49th position for example....

Germany is in 12th position

UK is in position 34.

Canada is in 8th position.

Costa Rica is in 16th Position.

The lower the number the better the position.

A color coded map without a legend is of not much use.

Yeah, you're right, didn't mean to be so critical.

I glanced through the methodology, which looks sound enough. The breadth of their data-collection sources looks reasonable as well, although one wonders how honest some of their sources can be without compromising, well, their own safety. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Their Predators of the Press list is surprising only because it exists publicly, and because it includes some names we wouldn't necessarily know about. Ditto the country rankings, although a few surprised me.

This organization appears to take its mission seriously and to provide useful persoal safety information for practicing journalists.

I did not make any kind of survey, but all the media reports of the Volkswagen Diesel Scandal that I encountered did not present the essential facts, but a sort of stew of fragments of the picture and half-truths that had to be confusing, even had the audience possessed a basic understanding of the technology involved.

It looks to me like the same sort of thing is shaping up with the Apple situation.

So we have drastic efforts to prevent gathering information at the one end and purposely or incompetently compromising its usefulness in its distribution.

I could offer my speculations on the motivations for this state of affairs, but regardless : information is key and critical.

To say I share your interest in the matter is gross understatement.

People always criticize the press. They say "Managed news" etc. I explain that it its news for profit. Each news company has its niche of readers or viewers. So, to maintain their readers or viewers interest, they must deliver news they want to know. The bigger the audience, the higher the sponsorships, and consequently, more money the news agency makes. So, that brings me to the point that I want to ask about. Why hasn't any news agency explained the evil of Sharia Law and how Muslims would bring it here if we accept them? I've asked some of my friends about Sharia Law and most have never heard of it. When I told a female friend of mine about decliterization, she couldn't believe it. And, there are a lot more horrors about Sharia Law. The press should bring this evil to the forefront.
