All Bent Out of Shape

04/05/2016 2:29 PM

Have a product that we are using a aluminum extrusion in as reinforcement.

Under test in the lab the product failed. The aluminum bent to far and held the bend. This at a lower force then ever before.

We tested the aluminum for hardness. With a Webster Model B we got 12.2. With a Colman impressor 72. The extruders test was a Rockwell E 77.

These all match pretty close.

But most manufacturers and the matweb list a 6005 T5 with a Brinnel hardness of 85 to 95 most at 95. Is there no standard to the temper that the extruder accepts the Rockwell E 77 as good?

The hardness seems to vary from each supplier....probably with price ha ha...

Hardness is probably not what you want to test for. You want to test for yield strength.

As I see it there is a relationship between hardness and yeild strength.

Looking at the specs on the aluminum alloys. As hardness goes up so does yeild strength.

To get back to the question. Most the specs that I have read by manufactures list the hardness of 6005 T5 thickness under .249 as HB 95.

The extruder that we get this from tested it and got a 77 Rockwell E. Which is a approximate 68 Brinnel. No where near the HB 95 given in specs by other manufactures or the matweb. In the tempering process is there no set hardness that these tempers have to obtain. I understand that these T1,T4,T5,T6 tempers are just a process listing on how the temper was obtained. Is there no set hardness that these tempers are suppose to give? Or is it you get what you get.

The standards are available here at IHS but cost$$...My guess is that there is a wide range depending on alloy spec... BS EN 755-2:2008...most of the suppliers will have a disclaimer somewhere, conditions vary, but min standard met...probably 75-90

I'm sure there are MIL-Standard and ASTM specs for these ae well.

We used a ton of Aluminum building electronic modules and housings for satellites and it was all traceable back to the source and certified by them to "meet the requirements of the applicable specification".

I uesd to write those specs for plastic materials and adhesives.
