Coffee Beer: Good to the Last Drop

11/01/2005 3:10 PM

Nestlé has filed an international patent application for a fermented coffee beverage that pours and foams like beer, but smells of strong coffee and packs a concentrated caffeine kick. A finely tuned temperature control process allows the addition of yeast, but stops the formation of ethyl alchohol.

I think coffee-beer, with a caffeine/alcohol kick would be awesome.

When I was in Toronto last summer I had a coffee beer, it was brewed by Mill St. Brewery in the distillery district. I don't know if it had any actual coffee in it, but it was one the best dang beers I've ever had! If you're ever in Toronto, you gotta check out this most flavorful beer.

I get up to Toronto about once a year. I'll have to look for it - thanks. Lately, I've been enjoying the last of some Spaten Octoberfest that I horded, and waiting for my pumpkin brown ale home brew to finish fermenting. I bottled it a little over a week ago. It smelled pretty good.

Pumpkin brown ale? wow, that sounds pretty tasty. How do make it? Is it your own recipe?

It's pretty simple actually - although I did cheat this time. I bought one of those commerical cans of "brown ale", and prepared it according to the directions. Then steamed two pounds of meat from french pumpkins - puurred it with about 2 tbsps each of nutmeg, cinnamon and cardomom - then added it to the fermenter with the brown ale. I was worried that it woudl smell like a babies diaper, but when i transferred it from the fermeneter to bottles (I strained it first), it smelled pretty good. I'm going to let it sit til Thanksgiving. It is a little silty at the bottom though.

I'll let you know how it turns out. I may even start a journal here about it.

Here is something you may try - not coffee but caffeine/alcohol.. http://www.anheuser-busch.com/news/BtoE_100404.htm

I've had that. Very similar to Red Bull with an alcohol aftertaste. Sweet & syrupy - not to my liking.

I seem to recall microbreweries offering stouts leaning toward a coffee taste. Will this be much different?

Coffee stout is a style of stout that is very dark and bitter. It may have a vague roast coffee aroma, but does not really taste like coffee. That said, there are a few coffee flavored stouts out there.
