Fewer people care to drive themselves now than in the past. In my day, it was a right of passage. I'm not sure why the younger generation doesn't care about it anymore, whether cars are no longer "interesting" or there is a lack of "drive" on their part.

The reason is,... driving impedes from their social media...

And from not driving they are able to give that extra 1% attention from driving a car and put it to their social media.

I've been driving for over 50 years and never had any of those problems!

When I started driving (c. 1963), a usable car could be bought second or third hand and provide decent transportation.

Repairs when necessary could either be performed by the owner/operator, or didn't require sacrificing your first-born pay for payment.

Pollution controls were minimal or non-existent.

Regulations were minimal.

Traffic congestion was considerably lower, and on-street parking was more available.

Car and ride sharing facilities were non existent.

Public transit was less comfortable and less frequent.

More times than not, repairs done by a 16-20 year old owner.

Most 16-20 year olds couldn't afford a car today, even if they gave up most of their other goodies.

They didn't want it enough then,... Because I couldn't afford mine, the only difference is, I wanted it enough to take on extra work.

A car running is worth $500.00, that what the junkyard paid for mine (catalytic converter) A somewhat dependable car, good rubber and starts, if your handy, ( where you can put brake pads in, shocks, etc,... In your own) and you've been saving for it $1,200.00 - $2,200.00.

But of course they don't save for it, it an instant gratification.

Parents may help out or chip in more so they'd have a piece of mind, or give them theirs because they were buying new..

But of course 16-20 year olds today are looking at the 15,000-20,000 range.

Hell, I stopped buying new 15 years ago, 4-5 years ago, I bought a 2007 Buick Lucerene with 80,000 miles on it for 10 grand. I'll run it for 200,000-225,000 miles and buy another used vehicle. Which will be in another year or two.

I'm sure mellienials mellinneals melineals the latest group of young slackers will love them.

After their mommies coaxes them out of bed and calls the car for them, they can be driven to day care flip burgers.

The survey was flawed, not enough options to express my opinions so it wouldn't allow me to complete it.

A lot of surveys are DESIGNED to give them the answers they WANT.

Sorta like when manglement asks, " So, what's your opinion of my decision? "

Like employee surveys: "Would you rather have less vacation or a cut in pay". Amazing how many employees thought they had too much vacation!

Yeah, like the question on how much you would pay for one. My answer wasn't among the choices and you can't leave it blank!

Same here.

No option there to say I would pay them Sweet FA for an autonomous car so they obviously want to tell their backers "ooh, look, we got all these people willing to pay this amount of $$$$$$, so give us billions of investment cash."

The whole survey was designed around eliciting that one response but they dare not say that upfront.

So far, statistics and my personal experience supports removing humans from behind the wheel.
