The Science and Engineering States

04/30/2016 11:43 AM

I created a dashboard using 2010 census data showing the states that have the most Science and Engineering jobs per capita. Just in case you don't know, "per capita" just means per person. These numbers tend to be small (~.01) since there are far more people in a state than actual science and engineering jobs (millions versus thousands).

What's interesting is when you compare the S&E jobs per capita between states. See below:

The dashboard can be found here

Here is a screen shot (darker green means larger S&E Jobs per Capita):

I have heard "dashboard" before, and intend to investigate further. Do you use some specific software to create these (including the CR4 top 500 users) "models"?

I use Tableau Public, found here:

The term 'dashboard' really just refers to an interactive graphic meant to let the user derive their own conclusions through exploring the data. The idea is you can get critical information at a glance like a car's dashboard (maybe not so critical when I'm creating them, but you know what I mean, ).

It's the interactive nature that makes it so useful. So if you go to the dashboard in this thread and click on a particular age (in the median age distribution), you'll see the states that fall into that median age. This quickly allows you to answer some questions like "what are the older states" and "is there any correlation between science and engineering jobs and a state being "older" or "younger".

Hovering over the states will give you the stats for that state, so for instance hovering over New York gives the following data:

State: New York
S&E Jobs: 328,851
State Population: 19,378,087
State Median Age: 38

It gets interesting when compared to another state:

State: Michigan
S&E Jobs: 172,831
State Population: 9,884,129
State Median Age: 38.9

So New York and Michigan are comparable in S&E jobs per capita and in fact filtering using the per capita graph shows us this quickly:

Perhaps you're more interested in only the highest S&E jobs per capita states. Then you can focus in on those by filtering like this (see below). You can select multiple bins by holding the control button as you're selecting them:

Notice that not just the map changed, but the distribution of median ages did as well and if you hover over them you will see the median age bin and how many states fall into it. If you then want to know "of these states, which has the lowest median age", simply use the median age graph to filter and you will get this:

So Colorado is essentially a younger state with a larger than average number of Science and Engineering jobs per person.

There seems to be quite a few American CR4 users from the top states. New dashboard?

Just in case you don't know, the word "capita" is actually plural and means "heads". If you really want the singular you need to translate "per person" as "per caput".
No, I have no idea as to when or why the plural form was introduced.

Capita is used because it's "per each head" which involves multiple people, not "per head". I was trying to provide a colloquial understanding when I described it as "per person".

"Per each head" and "per head" are both just as singular as "per person".

Would you happen to have a separate listing of what those science and engineering jobs actually are?

May help to know the classification, categories, types and possibly field of concentrations...

How about the absolute number of jobs per state? Would that show a trend for more engineering and science jobs in states with higher populations?
