Patent Illustration Services ? Step By Step File

05/04/2016 1:35 PM

Once upon a time I was filing for a patent and in the spirit of things I dusted off the old drafting square and compass to provide the necessary technical drawings that were based on my drawings and the step files that matched them.

Despite my artfulness and the artworks ability to get the job done they were quickly rejected for not being digital or whatever? I was dumbstruck, but soon enough a company provided by the patent attorney stepped in and made the necessary changes. Finding out who they used would probably cost me $450 an hour to call them and ask. .. sooo.. I'm asking you.

I was looking into it and it seems there are more than a few companies or persons providing this type of service.

I was wondering if any of you do this work or had recommendations or experience with any services or individuals you've worked with. Is there an app for this!? (a file would be available for this simple project)

I had done illustrations and even preliminary write-ups for the type of artwork for patents, it cut down and saved my clients on attorney fees. It was pretty much boiler plate write-ups. The illustrating is what took some time.

This was over 20 years ago. I eventually purchased a book on creating illustration for patenting, just to make sure I was doing it correctly. Not hearing from my clients was basically no news was good news.

Turned out that when they returned for more work to be done, some of the artwork and write-ups I created the attorney after proof reading it basically signed off on it right there for patenting application.

I just came a crossed it about 2 months ago. But even at the time I bought it, I saw it was old school.

I'm sure patent laws and requirements I'm sure has changed since then.

If you are satisfied that the drawings are good enough for the purpose, then all you need to do is scan them to file....this you can do on your own scanner, or if your drawings are too large you can try local neighborhood printer....Walmart, office depot, Staples, etc......I would have them in the .jpg and .pdf format...and a USB stick to hold the files....

Large file scan services

Good comments and links in the other postings. I would just add that a key principle is that for any element that is recited in a claim of a patent application, the feature must be shown in the drawings. So be sure that your drawings are clear and complete in that regard. And for further reference - the U.S. Patent Office rules for drawings are in 37 CFR 1.84, and further detail in MPEP 608.02.

I use Ron Crandall at Isometric Design for my drawing needs.

When I was doing it, I also found that, you have to make a reasonable patent search on your idea to ensure there isn't a simular idea already patented. When I looked into it how in depth the search should be, it was open for interpretation. And that a reasonable search has to be done.

And of course reference the ones you find where any auxiliary ideas are used

Back to the post, I see if I can get you some information on the patent illustration book/pamphlet I had.

I think I had downloaded on line.
