Caterpillar Generator 0.9MW

05/09/2016 9:45 AM

I have got three 0.9MW generators powering up the plant thru 4 ATS. When main power goes off, the first generator starts automatically and the breaker get closed normally but the second and third generators shows under frequency fault and do not start unless i press the reset switch? Can you please help?

Standing by the reset switch doesn't sound like much of a career opportunity. Invitation declined.

Hello,

Thanx for the comment, But those books does not have an answer to what i have asked. I have called the dealer but they said that is not in their scope. It is something to do with the control

The manuals for the control cannot be seen from here.

One could:

  • Go back to the commissioning records and double-check that every setting is in the "as commissioned" state, and try again.
  • Switch off the load and restart the first assist generator, and then the second, then putting the load back on line.
  • Call-in the individual that commissioned the sets, and get him/her to sort it out.
  • Etc.

Whatever is chosen, it will be a valuable learning exercise for both the individual and the organisation. Keep notes, and write it up after all is well.

The under frequency condition may be a transient situation occurring during startup....but first you need to determine if the control is at fault or the control timing sequence is the issue...I would try manual sequence start, while monitoring frequency...If there is no issue, then a stepped startup configuration...

you already got a clue.find the under frequency sensors or detectors and the circuitry.for a start replace them and start working from there .

dear, you need to mention about;

1. type of governor in your generator

2. type of controller you are using to control the generator, for example if it is Caterpillar genuine controller or you are using some other brand like Deep Sea or ComAp or Datakom.

3. you are saying that the controller on generator shows under frequency alarm at idle position, am i right? or this alarm comes when they are running?

for control, if this alarm arises during startup, you need to check settings of Governor.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Yes this Alarm arises up after 2 minutes from the time it starts up.

I will try that for sure.

also you need to check the tolerance values for under and over frequency settings inside the generator controller.

if you have to adjust frequency from governor for this issue, you will also have to adjust/fine tune the voltage accordingly.
