Biodegradable Six-Pack Ring

05/23/2016 12:48 PM

Has the CR4 community heard this story, about a Florida brewery that's created a biodegradable six-pack ring using brewery waste? I like that it's biodegradable; I just hope that it doesn't make sealife sick when it does.

We've always cut the plastic ones so the wildlife doesn't get tangled up in it.

The rings are supposed to be edible, made from by-products of things like barley and wheat. http://www.tampabay.com/news/environment/florida-brewery-unveils-edible-six-pack-rings-in-hopes-of-saving-marine/2278557

I like it. The critical problem I see is what happens when the ring gets wet before it reaches the beer consumer. If it immediately starts to biodegrade then this will likely be another noble effort failure.

I do my bit for the environment by buying beer by the case. (bottles Fred) that comes in a paper carton.

I do think this is a fine idea.

I haven't seen a ringed six pack in years.

Now that said why can't they make those rings out the same crappy plastic the make everything else out of now that falls part on its own after a few months regardless of whether it's out in the sun or not?

Obviously, somebody has figured out how to make produce crappy plastic that falls apart right away. The stuff is everywhere now.

That's probably because you haven't been to a town in years.

I just got back from a beer run and you are right.

I only saw three brands with plastic rings out of the dozens there. Everything else was in paper.

When under tension, like the rings are around the beer cans, that crappy plastic will probably break apart on the truck ride from the bottling plant to the distributor.

Maybe they should just sell it by the keg, that'll eliminate the plastic rings entirely, or make them so large the turtles can just swim right through.

(A six-pack of kegs, that's the start of either a party or a brawl. Either way, they'll probably look the same at the end; bodies strewn everywhere, one guy with his forehead caved in because of an attempt to crush a full keg against it(1).)

Notes:

  1. Self-inflicted if it was a party, done by another's hand if a brawl.

Six-packs and beer just don't go together.

Where is one of SolarEagle's pictures when needed? <:-(

Another use for the spent grain left over from the brewing process: dog treats. I buy them from time to time. When you open the bag the aroma is heavenly, and the dog loves them. Of course she hasn't yet met any food she doesn't like.
