Calculation for Standard B16.5 Nozzle Flange

05/25/2016 10:22 PM

Dear all,

Understand that for standard B16.5 Nozzle flanges, no design calculations needs to be checked. Design calculations shall only be carried out in accordance to Section VIII, Division 1- Mandatory Appendix 2 Rules for Bolted Flange Connections with Ring Type Gaskets"if it is a non-standard flanges.

Can someone tell me which of the clause in ASME VIII specifically specified that no design calculation is required for B16.5 standard flanges? Thanks in advance.

Careful: "no design calculation needs to be checked" means it still has to be made. But really reading, understanding and applying the standard is work to be done by the engineer. You will need the standard to answer the question.

You have misunderstood, or mis read, the spec.

Ask your engineer.

That exemption could plausibly exist, but you should verify it before relying on it. I do not have convenient access to a Code copy, or else I would offer to look it up.

Ignore the first two replies.

I read in ASME Code Section VIII, some time back that the Pressure-Temperature rating is acceptable in accordance with the Appropriate standard. I think UG-11 also

states the acceptability of Flange pressure-temperature rating. In one of the older edition of B16.5 there was question do you perform calculation for flanges and report calculated pressure-temperature rating for material included in Code. and answer was "No".

UG-44 states that the pressure-temperature ratings for listed flange and pipe fitting standards may be used. B16.5 is one of the standards listed.

Note, that if you modify the flange, it no longer meets B16.5 and will require calculations per VIII-1 Appendix 2.

The flanges as per ASME Code are divided into Standard flanges (i.e. pressure temperature rating flanges) and Nonstandard flanges.

A. All dimensions of standard flanges (pressure temperature rating) not need to proceed any calculations and and shall be easily found from Tables of ASME B16.5 as noted from Para. UG-44 (b) of ASASME VIII-1.

B. The dimensions of nonstandard flanges shall be calculated as per Nonmandatory Apendix 2 (Rules for Bolted Flange Connections with Ring Type Gasket) of ASME VIII-1.
