UHF, VHF TV and Radio Antenna Unwired

06/20/2016 3:27 AM

Is it possible to make the TV just plug and play in homes? The set-up is usually 2 wires (Power supply & Antenna). Why not make it like a bluetooth or a wifi set-up. Perhaps, wire the RF antenna to a remote module, that repeat clear broadcast of existing channel anywhere home. Do you have experience with such set up/device on the market? Additional wires for the TV antenna is such a waste and adds up dirty and organized wiring at home.

How about sending the power down the antenna cable? If your TV is not WIFI ready yet then you might want to look for one. Connection to an antenna is the last thing in mind when talking about TV nowadays.

The 3rd world countries are too good to miss, even to US companies. But' that's a good suggestion.

Yes, of course. It's called "iplayer", "4OD", "YouTube", etc.

Have you looked at today's smart phones?

Yep, but can you consider a slow cheap phones smart? Or may be, just the slow signal. Our average speed 3G,4G LTE down here, at best 3MBps. It's not that uninterrupted HDTV at all on smart phones.

The antenna does not NEED to be a wire into the wall. That scenario is for a 'remote' antenna. You can get a digital antenna for modern TV's so you just have a power cable running to the wall.

However, most TV's made today ARE 'plug and play' by the commonly known definition of the term. Each type of signal(1) has its own style of jack, and it's impossible to connect the wrong type of cable to the wrong jack(2).

Unless you were looking for the 'clean' appearance of no cables hanging down from the TV, in which case the solution is to build a 'cable raceway' in the wall to run the low voltage cables through, and to install a 'clock outlet'(3) in the wall behind the TV for the power cable.

Notes:

  1. Antenna, HDMI, DVI, A/V, etc.
  2. You can mix up the RCA plugs on the A/V inputs, but it won't damage anything, and there's only a few combinations, so even if you can't read the labeling on the cables, it's quick to work out(4).
  3. A single-outlet recepticle with a recessed mounting frame. The original purpose was to connect power to clockswhile letting them sit flush to the wall, but they're also wonderful to power wall-mounted TV's from too.
  4. With a show playing on the A/V device, grab a cable end, and plug it into the Left Audio jack. If you hear intelligible sound, then move it to the Right Audio jack, if not, move it to the Video Jack. Then repeat with the next cable end, and finally plug the third cable end into the remaining jack. Then go around to the front of the TV and watch the show, if the audio seems to 'pan left' when the action moves to the right of the screen, then reverse the audio jacks.

I stand corrected.

(I'd say 'get the marshmallows,' but that fuel will deposit some nasty gunk on the treats as it cooks them, and I would prefer to NOT eat poisoned marshmallows.)
