Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice - Two Cool Interactive Charts

06/26/2016 8:51 AM

Forgive the pun in the title! Anyway, I came a across these cool interactive charts on the arctic and antarctic sea ice extents in their respective Hemisphere's summer months. What I like about it is you can select the years in the list on the right to see how they compared to other years and the average on the chart. Enjoy!

The cool thing that I see is that it all goes back to be the same in the winter time (thats on your graph and year selection). Almost all years are within the standard deviation besides year 2012.

Here is the same graph for the Antarctis.

I guess we just found out that there is a natural variability.

If you click on the link that interactive graph allows you to view Antarctica as well. It's a bottom at the top left that lets you toggle between the arctic and antarctic.

FYI - You'll often see the 2 standard deviation shading on charts like these. What exactly does it mean? It assumes that if the year to year fluctuations were random, the percentage chance of having a year in a particular zone would be the following:

Within 2 standard deviations higher than the average = 47.72% chance (roughly once every 2.1 years)

Within 2 standard deviations lower than the average = 47.72% chance (roughly once every 2.1 years)

Larger than 2 standard deviations higher than the average = 2.3% chance (roughly once every 43.5 years)

Larger than 2 standard deviations lower than the average = 2.3% chance (roughly once every 43.5 years)

fun chart, wish the data went back centuries but satellites began tracking these types of events only since the 1970's.

Nope. No measurement can change any preconceived notions. Particularly a measurement claimed by a notorious political pork agency.

Oh, if we had only been able to vote Papoon into office when we had the chance.

If we had then my 401 Q might be "on time" for a change.

You can't buy that kind of prosperity for anything less than $1000 a dinner plate. Try the chicken. It's good and rubbery.

(Hmm, does this mean there's an opening in the freezers in the arctic market?)

All joking aside, NASA made an elegant graphic to present a vast amount of data in a form that is easy to comprehend. I particularly like the average and standard deviation bar for a fixed three decades being available to place on the graph. By adding one year or another one can now see for themselves how each year contributes to the average and how far from the norm is each year.

I see the arctic ice has recovered since 2012, and the antarctic has more too. Too bad it didn't have 2015 data. Is there a way to check spelling with the new editor?

It seemed to have a pretty abrupt swing on the recovery. It could go the other way also.

yes, and we may not be part of the next cycle, no matter how much carbon credits we own.

No spell check there. I use Google Chrome.

I use Google Chrome too, it's there. It's not in the tool bar any longer but it's there.

If you misspell a word, for instance rockat, it will have a red squiggly line underneath it (when your writing/editing your comment). Hover your cursor over that misspelled word and right click. A list of options will appear near the top of what you might have meant to spell. Left click the one that applies (in this case "rocket") and it replaces it. Also you can get suggestions from google if you want.

So to summarize, look for the red squiggly lines when you're writing, those are misspelled words or words the editor doesn't recognize. Right click on the misspelled word for suggestions.

I hope that helps!

rockat here has no red underline, but now "spellcheck" appears when I right click, but it doesn't do anything even if I ask Google for suggestions.

Hi SG. They do hoave data for 2015 and 2016, you just have to go down and a new menu appears with those two years. Poor graph design in my opinion. Use a smaller font and fit all the year options in one menu page!
