CT Coil & Multifunction Meter

07/03/2016 3:59 PM

Hi guys ,am having a few issues with my setup , its a 3 phase power supply system am messing with and am confused and desperately looking for a help firstly ive setup a multifunction meter with all voltage lines connecting appropriate phases (RYB,N) they all work fine, but when i connect CT coil it shows wrong values of current across the conductor, its way less,i have a power factor correction system setup parallel to input line to main load, which works perfectly but comparing amps between them and MF meter they differ a lot as a result KW,KWH,KVar,pf,Kvarh every parameter shown is wrong except volts across phases and neutral, what am i setting up wrong am using three 200/5 ct with burden 5va across each phases the direction of CT is also correct appropriate inputs have been connected to MF meter what is wrong with my setup? the CT's i used was way old like more than a 3-4 yrs unused could a CT go malfunctioning? i dnt have a spare CT to test it.. looking for replies..ty

"...its way less...", by a factor of 40? Where are you taking your readings, and what are the exact settings on your MF meter?

Am taking readings from MF METER , i think the factor of less than 10 because iR,iY,iB was around 73,85,93 amps respectively the reading from MF meter were approximately 1.345,2.565,2.676 amps i havent taken the reading from clamp meter!! Even if i did am sure it shows exact figures as PF controller does! Settings on the meter were all default i havent changed anything!!

Get a clamp-on ammeter and measure your phases and compare with the CT reading.

Am sure reading from clamp meter would be correct and MF METER displaying wrong values coz theres a 1 150 hp motor running for ibt coils and 2 50hp motor running for homogenizer they all literally suck up heavy juice up to 360 amps while starting and comes down to less than 50a so each phase is running at 80% capacity! My doubt is why is the brand new meter showing wrong values which is also CE certified and calibrated to show true RMS!!

Please find MF Meter part number & get manual of it. You will be able to find out your matter.

It would be easier to understand this post were some punctuation provided. Without it, the post is difficult to understand, and the problem lies buried in misunderstanding. Compare, for example:

  • "Let's eat, grandma.", and
  • "Let's eat grandma."

The presence or absence of the comma completely changes the meaning.

Please re-post using appropriate punctuation.

Good one. Another story , one error in placing the coma in wrong place in judgement spared a life.

"Hang him, not leave him" Instead " Hang him not, leave him".

Are you connecting the CT's in series with the the conductors? From what I read from your description, you said you connected the CT's across the lines. Usual scaling Ct's are connected like hook-on's. Regular CT's you have to open the line and and connect the CT between the open line ends. If you are connecting the CT's between the phases, the reading will be astronomical since that would constitute a short circuit connection. Utility mains almost always are magnetic flux step down or scaled down types and have to be inserted in series with the current carrying conductors not across the conductors.

Ya well, like PWslack said you too misunderstood my meaning,am connecting the CT across each phase (RYB) separately like a regular CT only!!
