How To Find Or Make A Bluetooth "Master" Device For Sending Audio

08/29/2016 3:38 AM

I need to make or buy a PICONET (BlueTooth) device "Master", that I can use while mobile, to send Audio signals to a BT (BlueTooth) headphones.

You would think that its easy and many companies sell transmitter units to do just that on ebay, quite cheaply!

But they are ALL it would seem) "SLAVE" devices, and they need a "MASTER" device to allow pairing, but I have not yet found at any price, a company that sells BT headphones that can be used in "Master" mode.....no built in screens!!

I have looked at some BT chips, and if I understood the data sheets fully, it could/should be possible to build a device, using a PC linked to it either via RS232 or USB, to "organize" the pairing, and that once paired, the PC is no longer needed provided that when it is switched on, the Slave device is already powered on, they will "pair".

What I am looking for here (and in other places on the IoT), is help in a practical way, tips etc., from maybe someone who has actually done it!!

Even knowing of a transmitter device that works as a master, or can be switched between master and slave, and that is not too expensive, would be great.

I should add detail that masters can only pair with slaves and vice versa....masters cannot pair with masters and slaves cannot pair with slaves.....it took me weeks to find out just why!!!

I find it strange that it appears that nobody has thought BT functionality fully with respect to devices made?

It appears that basically, only BT master devices are in phones, GPS, PC, and tablets and the like, all with built in screens....No screen = always slave.....

I hope I have made my problem clear, but please simply ask if I have forgotten any relevant detail....

I wonder how many other people around the world have bought a BT transmitter or receiver and found that they could not pair it for some reason....I sent mine back, as the sellers (all of them!) are totally useless and do not have a clue how Bluetooth works.

There is a reasonable explanation here for anyone interested:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth

Tom's hardware has also got a reasonable website and there is a BT Forum I have joined.....

But I simply cannot believe I am having such problems.....

The newest Raspberry Pi (3?) will do this.

It requires too much power for my application and size will be a problem too. I will be carrying it on another piece of equipment, for extended hours, it has to be as light as possible (I forgot to mention this before, so my apologies!) with a minimum of power requirements.

Your idea would need a screen as well.....I want to avoid needing that in the field.

The tiny transmitters sold on ebay, would be great, with an integrated battery, if they could do Mastering...like this one, and it weighs only about 2/3 of an Oz...18 grams....this is only a slave unit sadly.

Many thanks for your suggestions, I simply forgot to mention that these types of units were not practical for me, I would rather have a 1m50 long trailing cord....

But many, many thanks for posting, I am still grateful for ALL suggestions...

This is relatively inexpensive. Receive mode = slave mode, Transmit mode = master mode.

I have one that I use in receive mode, hooked to a small class D amp near my pool. I can use my smart phone as the master, and play all my music. I also have a second one that I can place in transmit (master) mode, and it will pair with the receive unit. That way I can use any MP3 player with a headphone jack.

Could you use one of those to transmit data several hundred yards, even a mile to a computer with one in receive mode? Could it be connected to Arduino that is taking the data?

Those are geared toward audio, rather than data flow. The HC04 (slave only?) & HC05 (Slave or master selectable? - or the other way around) are inexpensive Bluetooth modules for the Arduino.

Regardless, the Bluetooth limit is about 30 feet.

30 ft would work for me, at least that is safer than standing right by this thing.

Depending on the device class, you can get up to around 100ft (30 Meters) I believe. Depending upon environment (walls etc..)....

But do check on the web, Wiki for example, and of course both master and slave must have the same "distance" class or better....

Perhaps this blog has some more life in it left than I thought!!

I must admit, although I am a complete beginner with regard to Piconets, they are both interesting and useful in our everyday life!

Once I have received my recent order, I will post the results here.....

Cool. I will do some searching for components and pricing in my spare time, as soon as I find where I left that bucket of spare time.

I wasn't able to order on over Amazon, it was blocked, probably only for the US market and simply not enough postage.

But, it was easy to find several over here after I understood what to type in. Also, I found a good YouTube video of the one you recommended, showing that pairing is made automatically!!

Many thanks for your great tip.

To all here, I have now ordered what I am sure is what I was searching for, so basically, we can forget further posing here....but many thanks to all who in some way contributed, even if it wa just reading my question!!
