The Marangoni Effect, Tiny Bubbles, and Fluid Dynamics

09/14/2016 1:55 PM

You know the multicolored swirls on a soap bubble? This article discusses intriguing research that could lead to advances engineering stable foams. The researchers actually stopped the swirls, which are caused by the movement of surfactants from areas of lower to higher surface tension. The short video of their arrested bubbles has a gorgeous kaleidoscope-like appearance.

the science of bubbles (making bigger bubbles, having them last longer and the like) is pretty interesting.

So I wonder what would happen to my electrolysis experiment if the soap was introduced, mixed in, then turn on the current?

Could the oxygen bubbles on the anode end be kept separate from the hydrogen bubbles on the cathode end with a cell separator? Just curious, and I suppose the mixed up bubbles would make an interesting bang, not a whimper.

Here is a classic, written a long time ago, that is a treasure trove of interesting soap bubble phenomena. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I ordered this from Amazon today and was surprised at how many books have been written about bubbles. And I thought soap bubbles were just for children ...

what is really cool is when you use hydrogen peroxide in phthalic ester and phenyl oxalate ester (Glow Sticks) in a bubble solutions.

I hope I didn't say that out loud.... but if I did

Not recommended, but cool.
