Dear community,

As far a I know about mobile networks (some basics from a Communication Networks University course), coverage is based on the cell technology. I believe each cell is gaining capabilities over time: GSM, 2G, 3G, 4G. But I have been wondering,

Do you know if cells are also losing them over time? If that is the case, for how long do you think the 3G will last until companies start to remove it (from the main cities in Europe, mostly Spain)?

PD: I am asking this to know if my 3G Samsung Galaxy S-III could work for a few more years (it is already 4 years old). And finally, I have been thinking about upgrading to the CAT S60 phone, but I read that 4G does not work on it. It may be because it is not on 4G coverage so it uses 3G, however, could you link me some technical test results (microchip information) as a proof of it having 4G?

Those links may be great to understand how it works in theory (something I already have some knowledge about), but I cannot find any practical information for my question.

Can 4G cells lose 3G capabilities (anytime soon)? Or, if 3G cells and 4G cells are not the same, while adding 4G cells, are 3G cells removed?

I tried to google these but it does not work.

4G phones are compatible with 3G networks.

The most recent time when new technology was completely incompatible with old technology was the switch over from analog to digital television. When this happened there was plenty of warnings to the public that their old equipment would be useless trying to directly capture signals and reproduce images. No such warning has been made in mobile communication. Some carriers are starting to drop analog voice communication due to a lack of traffic. but 3G is not analog voice communication. Now with the enormous amounts of data a 5G link can distribute I do see a 3G machine becoming useless with the tsunami of data needed for each app.

Simply, the "G" stands for "GENERATION" . While you connected to internet, the speed of your internet is depends upon the signal strength that has been shown in alphabets like 2G, 3G, 4G etc. right next to the signal bar on your home screen.

2G – Delivered digital signal and offered up to 250Kbps speed. Supports voice, text and data services.

3G – At least 200Kbps up to 3Mbps speed.

4G – 4G delivers up to 100Mbps for mobile access, and up to 1Gbps for wireless access. Most wireless carriers offering HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) at up to 6Mbps are claiming that they offer 4G network.

4G LTE – LTE (Long Term Evolution) is one of the two standards offered within 4G, and WiMax being the second one. The specification calls for downlink speed of up to 300Mbps and uplink speed of up to 75Mbps.
