Chance is No Longer Needed When it Comes to Fishing!

Self-Charging Tag Tracks Fish for Life

The winter run of Chinook Salmon is about to start in the Columbia River. Thanks to Science and a Hydrophone dialed into 416.7 kHz, that should take the guesswork out wondering where the fish are.

I think the fish will win this one.

Hope there are no bears into tech gadgets - that would be a bit unfair to the fish.

Yeah, really! but with their keen sense of hearing, they (unknowingly) may already be tuned in and haven't associated the pings to the dinner bell yet.

Being they're going to plant these in Sturgeon and the way technology advances, are they going to have to break out the old "Victrola" to find these fish in 100 years from now?

I have mixed feeling about these programs, we need the info. for habitat conservation and of such. But, we don't have a 100-year analysis of the encapsulating material and the effects body fluids will have on the material, mainly from body acids.

I, myself, would rather see external tags, so that if there is a break-down in the encapsulation material, it would be less detrimental to the fish.

The next subject will be, "Technology Is Killing Our Fish!"

In another lifetime, (circa 1980) I worked on Sea Otter tracking beacons. The device was packaged in a molded plastic sphere, half clear/half blue and attached to the otters when they were captured or released from captivity.

The blue half contained the electronics and was heavy so the clear half dome was always on top when they surfaced. On the top surface of the PCB in the lower half, exposed to the sky, were solar cells that powered a transmitter when they were on the surface, and a small antenna.

I'll OT this because I'm just rambling.

I didn't think you were OT. It kinda goes along with my last post #4
