SpaceX Wants To Deliver The Internet Via Satellites

11/17/2016 9:04 AM

SpaceX just filed with the U.S. government for approval of their plan to launch 4425 satellites that would provide high speed internet access. With a billion dollar commitment from Google and Fidelity, SpaceX has in the past estimated that this project would cost about 10 billion dollars. When you consider how much money they could make selling high speed internet access in the U.S. alone, it really doesn't sound like that much money.

Here is an article describing the project and SpaceX's recent filing:

This is how the strangle hold of cable and telecom regional monopolies can get broken in suburban and rural areas.

Wow that's a lot of satellites...each one the size of a car....we already have quite a few....

Maybe this is the signature we should search for to find intelligent life on other planets....?

According to this, there are 2271 satellites currently in orbit. This would roughly triple the number.

So to look for intelligent life on other planets, they have to have TeslaWeb? Or are we just looking for orbital trash - see what happens when everyone litters their Happy Meal containers in space?

Putting these additional satellites up (normal low earth orbit, or high geosynchronous orbit?) would not necessarily guarantee no one else would have space in space, but it some makes one flinchy when launched up there.

Sounds like Iridium on steroids...with many of the same signal latency and wireless security issues, especially for geo-synchronous orbit giving prying eyes even more opportunity to get in on the action.
