A wire with a DC current flowing in it across a magnetic field is subject to a force perpendicular to the field and current Fleming's * Left Hand Rule.

Use enough wire and get the geometry right ...you have a motor.

*(for UK viewers...that's not Bob Fleming gough splutter)

Try dismantling a battery-powered toy that contains an electric motor and have a look at the bits. It should become obvious.

Is the value of play and experimentation being under-estimated?
